I think everyone is proud of all the attributes that one can identify himself with..it is human tendency to feel special/good(be proud,more proud(ego) about oneself,wealth,anything etc.,) when basic requirements like food,clothing,housing are met easily.. by any means proud of x is not mutually exclusive of proud of y..proud of something is a function of the environment that we encounter around us..In the hierarchy you have, we go down till the probability of being proud of something is met..at the end of day we have to feel special about something..so we assign our self to something among the groups based on some common factor and get pomp about it If your surrounding environment is full of zombies, animals, rarely human beings (comparatively less) or if you are in space..you stop at step 1..proud of human being (you are proud of the attributes below that too but its irrelevant and you don't even feel it as you don't know the below levels) If you come back from space..and mingle with ppl of various ethnicity..you are proud to be Asian then Indian -> Andhrite -> goes on Some attributes are strong based on the info we are fed up with..or some people just don't want to move up the order .. my 2 cents  | ||

the same sovereignty can be done for a State or district or a party. If we make it state level we will be stronger, if we make it at continental level, we are ven stronger. All group identity is based on something common. so people identifying themselves on language, or skin color, or region or culture makes some sense. this whole caste obsession - how exactly is a kamma or a kapu or a reddy different? do the significantly differ in culture or food or language? Bs or Vs are slightly diff with their food habits but that's also diluting now. so, where exactly is the difference and a need for a separate identity? | ||

why we get benefits under nationality, because we formed a group & we are creating funds for that. And the benefits that TN people are getting are more ,where as other state people of india are getting less. So where is nationalism here. Even we are getting funds from World bank also. And some cast associations are helping poor people, lets take kamma itself, Kamma organization provides scholarships for poor people & also provide accommodation . The only reason we are getting more funds from center is, we had a constitution. There also, some people will earn & some people will enjoy (of course it need to be done for social equality..) Except nationality (and probably statehood), remaining identities don't give any visible tangible reproducible benefits.... National identity gives you freedom, rights, protects weak in society, enforces law and order etc etc.... In most cases, national pride is something that unifies people...so, it is okay I guess since it makes nations stronger as all/majority citizens bond together on this attribute.
In most cases, any sub-national pride is something that divides society. The moment you start feeling proud of your state/region/caste/etc, you are forming sub-groups within a larger interest group which will weaken that larger interest group. Telugu Associations in USA is the classic example for this. | ||
