It is Classic children's literature - captured the imagination of a generation! It's not necessarily a literary classic ! the plot line and characters do get more fleshed out in the later books but if you did not like it the premise in the first book at all it may not be worth reading the other six...! Mythology is there everywhere - Indian, Greek, Roman, Norse , etc ..Percy Jackson is based on Greco-Roman mythology ..Rowling borrowed heavily from Indian mythology Rowling's genius was in juxtaposing just enough magic and mythology with usual student / teen life ...making it relatable for the kids ...and as the characters grow older she very skillfully brought in shades to the characters !
