It's important to know that Arab conquest of Spain was not an invasion whereby new muslim people replaced the old christians. The number of Arabs actually crossing Gibraltar Strait and arriving to Spain amounted to a total of around 50 000 during the conquest period (7 000 at the beginning and above 40 thousand in subsequent years), compared to an estimate of 4 to 5 million people living in the country. So, it can be said that it was a coup d'etat by a foreign force, helped by some local people unhappy with the current rulers. All arab people which crossed the strait to Spain, even in a cumulative number throughout all these centuries, were never larger than five to ten percent of the local population. Imagine Spain in 711 a.d. The vast majority of the people worked for survival and feeding their families. Sense of nationalism did not exist. Religion was at most an excuse for some social events. The average peasant did not take side in the ongoing battles between the counts and the king or among counts themselves, unless they were in the middle. One day, some new guys with unusual clothes arrived and become the new lords. That's the only perceived change, but otherwise life goes on as usual. The new lords still need farmers, smiths, carpenters, etc. so their lives, in general, are not in danger. With these new lords also come a new religion, but so what?, but after a few years, people learned that if they stick to christianism they must pay taxes but if they convert to the new religion they do not. In addition, under the new religion they get as a bonus some fringe benefits such as access to certain positions. Gradually, most people convert to Islam, and only some few fanatics remained with the old Christian religion. For similar reasons, this will reverse some years and centuries later. The Reconquista took up to the XIII century to control all but the southeastern part of Spain (Kingdom of Granada) which was conquered in 1492. Finally, the islamic moriscos, descendants of those native Iberian Christians converted to Islam, and still remaining in 1609, were either forced to become Christians or leave Spain. So, answering the question, and why Spain is not longer pagan as the original Iberian natives. | ||
