Sorry, I bad..you are right..I confused it with Satyam in Chennai.
Satyam had 1500+ seats before chaging to Multiplex.
Devi 70 was the largest in AP during that time with 1300+ followed by Jagadhamba with 1000+ seats, followed by Sudarshan 35 MM with 1000+ seats.
Devi was always Nag's adda (Shiva, Geetanjali, Ninne Pelliadtha, Annamaya) - Silver Jubilees here.
Sandhya was mega movies ki adda (Chiru aithe okka 12 to 15 100 days movies vunnai) followed by Tholi Prema - 235 days, Khushi silver jubilee.
Sudarshan 35 MM was Mahesh Babu fort - 6-7 silver jubilees.
Chiru is the only actor after Shoban babu to have maximum 100 days movies in Hyd (35+ movies). Some records will be never be broken again like Sacin in Tests & One dayers |

Subbi Gaddu was a very shrewd business man...He did release in Maheshwari 70 MM but lifted it in 2 weeks (Devi 70 MM - I think was the second biggest theatre in seating capacity after Jagadhamba in Vizag. Had 1500+ seats).
Most of the hindi movies jubilee hits were in Maheswari 70 MM. He could never lift those movies  Off the topic gaani, but since this thread has come to its climax, I am going off track. One major record at Maheshwari 70 MM was:
Hum Aapke Hain Koun - 100 weeks (60 weeks regular shows from Aug 1994 to Oct 1995) then it ran 40 consecutive weeks for morning shows because DDLJ ran for 52 weeks in regular shows.
Mumbai tharuvatha, Hyd had its own history. Gone are those days where you had the movies for days & months. Today Fri, Sat & Sun collections batti HIT aa FUT aa decide chestanurau  |

Very good post. I could relive those experiences while reading your memories.
Ippudu naa story..Koncham length ekkuva vuntundhi..Just to add / modify few points here & there :
Pre GL days in 1991 :
Jan 05 1991 varaku no idea when Stuvaratpuram Police Station will release. No audio release in the market. Creative Commercials - Yendamuri - Illaiyaraja - ARR combo had a 100% hit rate with Annaya. Lot of expectations, but fans were worried on the planning and on director as ARR was not directing and was given to Yendamuri (the 1st & last movie he made). Suddenly 4 days before the release, there was an AD in Andhrajyothi / Deccan Chronicle. Audio to be released thru echo (Raaja's audio company) on 07 Jan and release date on 09 Jan. The main theatre in Hyd was allotted to Maheshwari 70 MM, Kachiguda. Fans in Hyd has sentiments which were so strong...My cousin told that this film is heading to a disaster, as there is no main theatre in X-Roads. No film in Hyd except Simhashnam became hits in 80 & 90's without the main theatre in X-Rds. As expected movie disaster which put a full stop to the ever green combo of Chiru - K S Rama Rao (Creative Commericals) - Yendamuri & ofcourse the genius Illayrajaa.
Cut Chesthe...Adhi summer holidays in 1991. I am done with my 6th class annual exams. Ad again in Andhra Jyothi...Music Release on ALahari one month before the movie release. After 3 days, there was an ad again saying it is a record that 1,00,000 audio casettes sold in 3 days (which is a record in India). We knew Bappi Lahari gave music only for 2 Telugu movies before (Simhasanam & State Rowdy), was shocked to know that it was hit right from the word go. Songs were played from pan shop to irani café from the day 1.
May 09 1991 - Movie released in 31 theatres in Hyderabad including Maheshwari 70 MM for morning shows (2nd highest release after Kodhmasiham which released in 33 theatres on 09 Aug 1990 in Hyd). All posters had A certificate. I called up Sudarshan theatre and the manager said that the all can watch Chiranjeevi movie. Only that there are 2 gory murder scenes (Murali Mohan & Chiru friends) and hence censor gave A certification.
Main Theatre was SUDARSHAN 70 MM at X-Rds (not 35 mm). Anna adda after Sandhya 70 mm..Pasivadi Pranam, Yamudi Ki Mogudu ran 150 days here. This movie ran 175 days and had to give way to Rowdy Alludu on Oct 18 1991 missing the 180 days mark (silver jubilee). I remember fan associations spoke to Allu in 1992 to give 6 months gap for any HIT movie if releasing in the same theatre to make sure it has complete silver Jubilee Run. Hence Apadhbandhavudu released on Oct 09 1992 exactly after 180 days of Gharana Mogudu which released on April 09 1992 (last Chiru silver jubilee movie in Hyd - with exception to Tagore which was forced to run in Sapthagiri 70 which is Allu's theatre at X-Rds).
Some More Tid - Bits on this movie :
1. Printed Shirts & Stone / Acid Wash jeans were a rage in Hyd in 1991 due to this movie effect. Kumars & Chermas made a fortune that year
2. Prabhu Deva's 2nd movie where he composed full songs to Chiru - Title Song, Vana Vana song(First full fledged song composed by Prabhu Deva was Gagana Kiranam Gaganam Idi in Raja Vikrama).
3. I clearly remember there was a huge board put in the front of main theatre for first couple of weeks, not to bring Children & Pregant Ladies into the compound due to huge lati charges for tickets. I used to go to Crystal Restaurant ( I was just 11 years then) with my cousin and watch the hungama for tickets from the window.
4. I watched it 7 times - 3 times in Hyd and 4 times in Vizag at Jyothi theatre.
5. 100 days function was celebrated at 4 centers on his b'day 22 Aug 1991. He flew in a chartered flight to attend 4 centers (some scenes were shot for Appula Appa Rao movie).
6. Movie producer died one month before the release (Maganti Ravindra Nath Chowdary). Had great movies on his banner shyam Prasad arts. They showed 3 mins bvideo on the producer before the movie begins.
7. Chiru used to stay at Taj Krishna or Viceroy hotel (now Mariott) whenever he used to come to Hyd for shootings. To cut down the costs, he stayed at film chamber guest house for last 1 month of shooting including the title song iwhich was shot at Annapurna studios & Swapna Lok Complex, Sec for 8 nights.
I can go on & on about the Chiru Mania from 1987 to 1992 with facts & figures. My childhood memories are so much imprinted that I can share every incident even after 20 more years
And finally some self-dabba - When I met Annaya in 2007, I told him that you will never get a FAN like me who can tell the release dates, title cards (producer, director, music director), records, theatres in Hyd for every film of his from Donga Mogudu to Stalin. I need NO google or wiki search to tell the details. I shared few records which he was stunned. He hugged me and said he is blessed to have people like me who have unconditional love. I showed him all the paper cuttings, Chiru magazines (which I have till date) to prove my madness.
The STORY of FAN (SRK Movie) could be a indirect reference to my story (minus any negativity against Chiru)

At least with out one thread on Megas day never ends in this DB...When it comes to Gang leader i had a chance to see Chiru in Chennai around that time , what a grace man...to be honest i couldnt see directly into his eyes..Aa geddam tho white shirt / black pant with wife in his old 2 door car....kekkaa...any day anytime ee pillaaa.....na...m....antha after Chiru na.. |

When the characterizations itself were larger than life, it shall obviously look over the top.
All those characters were absolute fiery and emotional characters where any kind of subtlety was unwarranted and audience wud hav rejected such potrayals
And NTR was definitely more than capable of subtle potrayals like Badi Pandthulu, Manchi Manishi, Nippulanti Manishi and his signature role, potrayal of Krishna was nothin but his most underplayed character.
Jst becoz he wore bell bottoms and danced with heroines half his age doesn't mean his actual greatness is conveniently forgotten amidst them... |

You hardly seem to hav watched NTR's social movies...
Kanyasulkam, Appu chesi Pappu Kudu, Manchi Manishi, Missamma, Gundamma Katha, Badipanthulu, his senior roles in Bobbili Puli, Sardaar PR, JC, Kondaveeti Simham, etc all were great potrayals of those characters....no one else cud do justice to them
Colour movies ante comedy ayipoyindi GA andariki....Lots of memorable roles were done during 70s too...ppl remembered those roles and thts why he still ruled despite SM limitations...
Our older generations were no fools....the least we cud do is respect their choices.... |

I'm amazed at this db.. Average age group watched only chiru.. Growing up.. 82 lo ntr out f movies.. And in 80s there was not much access to old movies.. How can one fall on love with ntrs social movies?
