Usually around 3% - 4% more than floating rate home loan I think. But these loans are generally fixed rate. I compared to floating rate home loan because most home loans in India are floating rate so people have a good idea of what those rates are. I can't give a specific number because the benchmark rates are different in different periods of time.

Inquisitive:US rates can't be compared to India. US has a strong currency and low growth rates so people are willing to lend at low rates. Almost 0% rate ki boledanta dabbu checking/savings accounts lo pettukunnavaallu mana DB lo ne unnaru. India is a fast growing country with a depreciating currency. Near 0 rates isthe evaru banks ki dabbulu ivvaru so banks won't be able to lend at those rates either.

Debts of large groups.. Reliance Infra 1.25 lac cr, Vedanta 1.03 lac cr, Essar 1 lac cr, Adanj 96k cr, Jaypee 75k cr, Gmr 47k cr, Lanco 47k cr, Jsw 57k cr..

- Reliance, Vedanta, Adani and Jsw portfolio of operating/under construction/development assets are low stress.. means as an eg. their power assets have full fuel supply source and long term power supply arrangements for life of projects which are providing risk free cash flow to service debt, under construction assets can also be risk free with fuel, power arrangements in place ahead of completion..
- Other hand Lanco, GVK and Gmr has low debt compared to large groups but highly stressed (stressed doesn't mean default).. Stress could be due to fuel shortage/issues, delay payments by state discoms, delay in under construction projects with increases project cost(int. during construction/cost overruns)..
- BUT, stress doesn't mean default.. Gmr and Lanco default rated debt is significantly low even with high stress quantum compared to Essar which has a better portfolio..
Important to have healthy debt-to-ebitda multiple for companies.. Mean 2.2x to 2.5x is good..
Jaypee's multiple before disinvestment is very high, i think around 17x (not sure but abnormally high)..
Happens because group simultaneously starts developing/constructing multiple mega projects at a time. As infra projects development life cycle is around 5-7yrs..large Debt will drawn from banks to build these and cannot be serviced till they start generating annuity cash flows.. |
