EW DELHI: The man who played an important role in Narendra Modi's journey from Gandhinagar to New Delhi, and was instrumental in taking the Nitish Kumar-led Mahagathbandhan to a stupendous win in Bihar, has joined hands with Congress for the UP and Gujarat polls. Prashant Kishor, now an adviser to the Bihar CM, is also assisting the Congress in Punjab. The three states go to polls in 2017. He is said to have held a series of meetings with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul to finalise the "terms and conditions", and sought the freedom to take decisions independently. He had easy access to both Modi and Nitish during his stints with the two. Congress hopes to recover from the poor show in the 2014 general elections where it won only two of 80 seats in UP. The party has only 29 MLAs in an assembly of 403 members. In Punjab, however, the party has started to recover. While Kishor confirmed the development, he refused to divulge details about the strategy he and Congress would adopt. Sources, however, said Congress would fight on its own instead of forging any poll alliance in UP. Sources said Congress has convened a meeting of senior party members from UP on March 2, in which the subject may come up for discussion. Rahul is likely to attend the meet. However, people who know Kishor say his biggest ambition is to craft a Congress win in Gujarat, a state BJP has controlled since the early 1990s.
