Here's an interventional cardiologist that I know. He makes close to a million a year in a small town of about 20000 people, but he is on-call EVERY other day. When he is on-call, he has to be within 20 minute drive to the hospital at night and on the weekends. Is it really worth the money, when you have to put so many hours in, not only during the training, but even after? | ||

Not all the doctors make millions. Only about 1-2% of them. The vast majority make somewhere around 200-250k/yr, some even less. Its quite likely that these doctors you are talking about do not want their kids to have to put up with bureaucracy and regulations like they are having to. | ||

Ysr2009, My point is, if kids want to work as hard as they do to get into Medicine, they can succeed in any other field, and make as much money, and sometimes even more. In medicine, you deal with so much bureaucracy in the form of insurance companies, hospital administrators, difficult patients and malpractice. I know these first hand, because I practice medicine. I will do all I can to encourage my kids to go into other fields such as technology, finance, business etc | ||

The way telugu kids (and other indian kids) are getting into med schools, in about 20-30 yrs, more than 50% of doctors in the US will be Indians and Chinese (and other asians). what I found is that scores doesn't matter much when you are applying to top colleges. Because, everyone there will have same perfect scores. you need to have something else magical that separates you from other kids. | ||
