As i have saying for long, India's problem is not high interest rates, it is bad regulations, bad governance, corruption etc..and reducing interest rates is like throwing good money after bad. Rajan has been pressing banks and regulators to bring defaulters to justice. If the banks balance sheets are screwed up due to NPAs, reducing interest rates is not going to make then lend more. If there is a big roadblock ahead, making the road smoother is not going to help. That is the analogy here. The govt. has to do aggressive action against NPAs like set up a "bad bankk" and take over all the NPAs a la what has proved successful in many countries like Sweden in the 80s. Or they have to merge a lot of banks together into 4-5 bigger banks rather than a lot of banks that are susceptible to political pressure. Witness REI Agro, even after RBI launched an investigation, UCO Bank and others went and gave another few thousand crores of loans. The govt. has done nothing from a fiscal point of view to rein in the PSU banks, bank mergers, better guidelines etc..asalu unprecedented majority pettukoni ucchya poyinchali bank unions ki....in fact, not one decision has been taken to move to a better governance of PSU banks...the situation remains the same as under UPA. Btw, for all those ignorant folks cribbing against Rajan, he had a cold relationship with Chidambaram too. See the articles around the time when he said he will walk with the govt. but the govt. will have to take a few steps forward. In fact the current govt. relations are as bad or good as with the UPA. That is the nature of the job - the RBI governor is independent and he has to withstand stupid demands of politicians and media and corrupt industrialists. | ||
