While PM Narendra Modi himself did not mention Jawaharlal Nehru, described by many as the architect of India-Africa relationship, in his address at the Africa summit, it was more than made up by the reference to India's first prime minister by several African leaders.

While Modi mentioned Gandhi, Mandela and Nigerian and Egyptian Nobel Laureates, Wole Soyinka and Naguib Mahfouz, respectively, there was no mention of Nehru. However, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe, who spoke next as the co-chair, described Nehru as a great leader and Indian National Congress as a great political party. There were a few chuckles though in the hall when the 91-year-old Mugabe said Indira Gandhi when he meant Mahatma Gandhi.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco too mentioned Nehru in his address and so did Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi who recalled Nehru's friendship with Gamal Abdel Nasser.

Also interesting was the manner in which a colourfully dressed member of Swaziland team took upon himself to announce the arrival of King Mswati III on the podium to address the summit.
