product-based may sound good... if you are ever laid-off, you are left with proprietary knowledge which is not worth in market. After consulting for 7 years, I opted for a FT in a weak moment (new house + new baby = looking for secure position). It is banking/insurance industry... very laid back and avg. pay. But I turned lot of table to make things move in the company... including working on latest/greatest tech. to keep myself excited.... which in turn impacts my pay check. bottomline... as opposed to consulting, in FT you have to prove yourself to move up, that includes taking some BS politics, no matter what industry it is. | ||

if you have to take a decision of finding a FT position which one is better for life and of course money ? product based or service based ? my choice used to be banking but it is not a recession proof, we will get decent pay check and bonuses but very pressurous life, my opionion is it is okay to compromise for few thousands but life has to go smoothly, health and insurance sector is pretty stable but pay wise cannot beat banking. next comes product based companies, not sure how these companies pay nor work environment whether they are recission proof etc etc .. i am in cross roads of deciding whether to take ft or continue consulting if you have 401k contribution from consulting position then i guess ft can't beat the consultant check. but again there is lack of vacation and health insurance in consulting, this is another big question pondering in my mind but i dont want to make this thread consulting vs ft. both has there own pros and cons, neverthless ft is something that every individual has to take at some point of time, so i guess this is the time for me so tell me guys which sector is better for FT jobs. what are the main factors that needs to be considered for taking FT. How to know about the group your are going to join is safe or fragile to the internal conditions? just to narrow down the topic add your suggestions keeping sr s.w developer who is upto date with the technologies in microsoft stack of technologies.
