The new excise policy is giving a high to the TDP government in Andhra Pradesh. In just a month since the new policy was implemented, the state netted a revenue of Rs 801 crore through liquor sales against a target of Rs 384. According to sources, the change in liquor policy that allowed the state government to take control of 10 per cent of the shops in each district resulted in the increase in sales. As part of its new policy, the TDP regime is operating about 400 shops in all the 13 districts. Manned by excise staff, these government shops have reported roaring sales in almost all the outlets. In June, the excise department could earn about Rs 400 crore. Accordingly the target for July was reduced in order to make it achievable. But beating all expectations, the liquor sales more than doubled in July. Excise officials are happy over the success of the new policy which is more or less similar to what is in place in Karnataka. "This is the highest income ever earned in a month through VAT on liquor. As the government shops are giving the private owners a run for their money, no shop is able to sell non-duty paid liquor. This has resulted in higher sale and the private shops are also unable to flout the maximum retail price tag as the government shops are present in almost all districts", said a senior official in excise department. Thanks to the bumper revenue from liquor, the overall revenue in July reached Rs 3,370 crore which is the highest for any month in the current financial year. The total revenues from all sources during the last four months have crossed Rs 11,989 crore. With people flocking to the government shops in the hope that the MRP will not be violated, the private outlets are facing the heat. As a result, private outlets are offering a discount sale at many places. "For example, the private liquor outlets in Vizainagaram district never used to adhere to MRP norms. But after the new policy came into existence, there has been a sea change in the situation and we have received reports of them offering discounts to consumers," said the official. East Godavari topped the list with the highest sale followed by Guntur and West Godavari districts. For the first time, Rayalaseema districts too reported a growth in overall liquor sale by about 10 per cent. |
