At the outset, i must say i am not a big fan of Rajamouli. I really Eega and to some extent the screenplay neatness of Maryada Ramanna, did not see Magadheera, so can't comment on that, got a headache after i watched Simhadri and Yamadonga. Even some of the better ones have some moments of brilliance in an otherwise average product - like Chatrapathi or Vikramarkudu. But Eega was his coming of age movie. To take a project as huge as Bahubali and do justice to it is itself an achievement. Most big budgeted hyped up movies fail to deliver. After watching the first half, i thought he might not deliver. There was not much to praise nor much to criticise. There were some grand shots and sequences but not any strong emotions. A nicely shot romantic episode between Tamannah and Prabhas. Towards the latter part of the first half, it picks up and as the movie proceeds into the second half the pace picks up stealthily but grandly till finally ending in a blaze of glory in the last hour or so. This last 45 mins to an hour are nothing shot of what audiences might have seen a Lord of the Rings or Red Cliff etc. The background music towards the war sequences and the end was relentless and soaring and i stood watching the end credits to listen to the score. The graphics are world class and i did not notice even one jarring episode. The one issue with the movie is the pacing and that too is deliberate as they were making a two part movie. Like many of our movies and Rajamouli's himself (in Chatrapathi) which fall flat after the first half, here the entire movie is a first half and the ending of the movie has to be seen as an interval bang. The performances were good all round - though Ramya Krishna and Satyaraj were the best and Rana and Tammanna were the surprise packages. I must admire Rajamouli's team for the screenplay skills though - just like Maryada Ramanna and Eega, there was a tremendous ease and flow in the screenplay. Another slightly jarring note is that audience will be bit surprised to see the small role of Anushka (in part 1), the characters and their relations etc as they might have expected different from the promotions. My one overwhelming feeling as i stepped out was that Rajamouli made me feel proud of TFI standards. This movie has legs, i will go again next week. I would give this a 4 on 5. |
