How is the mirrorless, i just upgraded to a D5200 from an old Olympus DSLR last year. I have been using DSLRs since 2006. While upgrading to D5200, i did see whether it was worth going in for a mirrorless, but i thought the jury was still out on that. Would love to hear your experience.

The 10-24 is a great wide angle, that would be perfect for these kinds of landscapes.

I am not on 500px, i was on Flickr but of late the site has become painful to use.

after a lot of research ..I opted mirrorless bhayya...not all mirrorless are cut out for professional use....fujifilm xt1 just hit the right notes ...the best mirrorless out there....light and easy to use...lot of manual controls...dials for iso, shutter speed...look and feel of vintage 35mm cameras...xt1 focusing system is on par with dslrs....ideal for landscapes, travel, street photography ...fujifilm colors are brilliant....x-sensor produces very vibrant colors and tones...

Himalayan trips will make you realize that you are just a human being..
I had my chance of luck and fortunate to explore few most deep, rugged and amazing places across Himalayan rages across Arunachal, Sikkim and Himachal. even taking dangerous chopper routes
my views towards mankind are completely different compared to prior.. one should be really fortunate to entourage the unique beauty of the Great Himalayas.
One will realize some amazing facts of life even if you visit without a purpose

This was with the 50 mm, 1.8. If not for the landscapes, my prime is almost like my default. Lovely for portraits and low lights. I wanted to buy a 35 mm, 1.4 but that was beyond what i wanted to spend.

I've just spent a bomb and bought it...i switched from nikon d3100 to fujifilm xt1(mirrorless)...got 35mm1.4 and 10-24mm wide angle...my first cam upgrade ...i hope to stay with this system for a long time to come...

Thanks.

Mushin:

None of them was Telugu btw. And no one from north of the Vindhyas. It was like a microcosm of Mumbai and Bangalore. The Bangalore folks were all Tamilians while the Mumbai folks were Gujju, Kutchi and Christian. Just like these two respective cities were built by outsiders, no one from these cities on the trip were native Kannadigas or Marathis.

Not to forget that hostess milking cows in the morning to get us hot tea. These are warm vignettes from the land of Kinnaur and Spiti, home to some of the friendliest and affectionate people i have had chance to meet. These were the people who made the trip memorable despite the tough travel over 9 days.

Nikon D5200, largely used my wide angle, hardly had to take out my prime or telephoto except for a few portrait shots. No tripod too. The only effort on my part was walking around uphills and downhills and early in the mornings to get some shots.

Thanks mastaru. And everyone else who went through the pics.

Most of the credit has to go to the beauty of the place. I did not know if anyone noticed the third pic there, which was a bit of an outlier. You will find a Rajnikanth Hindi movie playing, 2 stores having their TV on showing Rajni in double action glory.

Thanks. In some of the snaps, the skies got overexposed. I should have shot in RAW and processed later. I did not do any post processing as a) it takes too much time, b) i do not know how to and c) i don't want to spend that money to get a Photoshop license.

Thanks. In some of the snaps, the skies got overexposed. I should have shot in RAW and processed later. I did not do any post processing as a) it takes too much time, b) i do not know how to and c) i don't want to spend that money to get a Photoshop license.

Thanks. will lead a bacha gang there next year if things work out. is this time of the year best? or July is also fine?

July is better as the Rohtang pass will open and travel will be easier. Though you might miss out on the snow capped mountains (slightly) as the snow will melt a bit, you also get better greenery.

If you are going with family, i would suggest around 3 days in apple country Sangla (which is as pretty as Switzerland) and 3 days in Kaza with some day trips to some of the places nearby.

Check out Spiti Ecosphere. They arrange these trips. I went with a group which had all solo travellers - 7 women and 2 men, ahem...

assuming we get there somehow, is the place itself OK for kids ani. breathing issues types emi undavu kadhaa? and food availability etla undhi? getting there is not an issue.

Apparently kids adjust easier, that is what the trip organiser told us. Food availability is not an issue if you restrict to the big towns like Kaza and most places in Kinnaur and Sangla, where there are decent hotels. If you are going with family, i would suggest around 3 days in apple country Sangla (which is as pretty as Switzerland) and 3 days in Kaza with some day trips to some of the places nearby.

Puns apart, the travel is arduous. The army opens the rohtang pass only late June, that makes it slightly easier. But still it is a long travel.

Are you kidding me? Puns apart, the travel is arduous. The army opens the rohtang pass only late June, that makes it slightly easier. But still it is a long travel. The only half decent town is Kaza which has a whole of 2 streets. That has some okayish hotels. And there might be altitude issues. But that being said, one of my friends went with his kids, which continues to amaze me.

If you want to get a similar experience, you can try Leh and Ladakh which are actually quite commercial now and you will have traffic jams, which are a modernist development symbol. Every Tom, Dick and their dogs are going to Leh and Ladakh now becuase of the easy flight access from Delhi to Leh.

For instance, the homestay revenue in each village is shared with the other homestays. The village of Demul has a rotational homestay - a few houses will get a homestay facility for a year, but their chance will come again after a couple of years so that every house gets a fair share.

Welcome back from the Middle kingdom. how was the Ganja?

For that one had to go to Kasaul, Malana etc. next year veyyali program. Those places are littered with Israelis who take a break after their military draft and get doped out here.

You see that old woman there, taking two of our bulky bags to the cars, despite our protestations, without a huff while we would be barely able to move without panting in the oxygen depleted heights.

And that other guy barely past his teens, but already a father, running around to get hot water in buckets in the biting morning cold.

Not to forget that hostess milking cows in the morning to get us hot tea. These are warm vignettes from the land of Kinnaur and Spiti, home to some of the friendliest and affectionate people i have had chance to meet. These were the people who made the trip memorable despite the tough travel over 9 days.
The Kinnaur Spiti trip was more of a holiday on wheels or a road trip rather than a go-to-a-place-and park-our-behinds-on-a-couch vacation. The route is arduous and long from the big tax stand called Shimla. But there is no destination we were going to. We were just stringing beads along a necklace spanning quaint villages in Kinnaur and Spiti. Starting from the green hills in Raksham to the pretty and clean town of Tabo and then the funnily name Fukchung in the Pin Valley and then Demul, Komic and Kaza in Spiti.

The landscapes that would surprise us at every turn, waking up even up the most resolute sleepers in the car. Landscapes that would turn from green to barren in an hour, gorges deep enough where the sun would barely touch the bottom of the ravine, snow mountains and glaciers yielding crystal clear water flowing down and merging with other rivers along with the way - the Baspa, the Sutlej, the Pin, turquoise lakes on top of hills etc. We ran out of adjectives to describe the places we saw, calling it surreal or ethereal are good only till the next bend in the road when other surprise would await us. Our cameras too would not be able to do justice to the landscapes. Probably an IMAX or 70mm film might. Or probably not.

We managed to see a bunch of monasteries in Dhankar, Kee, Tabo, Pin Valley, Komic etc and each had a different story to tell and got to know some nice facts from the monks and their orders.

For a few days we had to stay in homestays in villages with a population of just around 100-200. In the evening cold, we would gather around the warmth of the kitchen with cow dung cakes burning in the stove. The kitchen was like a family room in those villages, with kids doing their homework and playing around. It was heartening to see men sharing a lot of housework. Most of the fields were actually worked upon by the women while the men folks would be away working in the nearest big town Kaza. Barley, green peas and potatoes were the main crop in most of the area.

Staying in a really rustic homestay was really great for most of us to get to know the life and rhythms in these villages. The dry toilets (which were nothing more than a hole in the ground) and the lack of power to charge our batteries were a minor hassle, but you tend to ignore it soon. No one in the group fell sick despite the constant travel and food and water being a bit more compromised on than usual.

Only one when goes to these villages does one realise the extraordinary compromises that the people are living under - in terms of education, health, power, things we take for granted.

Living under these conditions has made the people very collaborative and helpful that marks them out. For instance, the homestay revenue in each village is shared with the other homestays. The village of Demul has a rotational homestay - a few houses will get a homestay facility for a year, but their chance will come again after a couple of years so that every house gets a fair share.

Roads can definitely be better making the region more accessible to the rest of the country. But that brings with it the risk that we will have hordes of travellers from Chandigarh or Delhi road raging through the hills and dunking beer bottles down the hills on weekends, making it another Shimla or Manali. It is a difficult question to answer considering that we are irresponsible travellers. But the government can supplement the facilities through careful intervention and try to strike a balance through sustainable tourism.
The region is not easy on everyone. The altitudes can result in frequent tiredness and shortness of breath and restless and sleepless nights. I hardly slept 2-3 hours each day. But one does not feel tired though and there is too much adrenalin pumping to catch the dawn light on the mountain tops.

There would be some standout moments that would still play on the back of our eyelids at night - like the sight of the Dhankar monastery from top of the hill; the clean, sparkling river at Raksham, the sight of the Komic monastery draped against the snow capped mountains, the Nako lake nestled in a snow capped bowl etc.

I thought going with strangers was going to be a challenge, especially considering my own idiosyncracies. But the group was largely great especially my cab mates, who made each day fun and interesting with discussions on movies, politics, pop culture, feminism, religion etc topped with an icing of songs and music.
