vunkl, sorry if i came across as saying Fincher is next to nothing, but like you have already mentioned it might simply boil down to a matter of personal preference or affinity to a certain type of work. For instance, just speaking about camera work - To me Fincher's camera work is geniuous, his screenplay abilities not so much. Fincher's camera work has some spatially breathtaking and digitally enhanced camera maneuvers, while PTA relies on steadicam long uncut or unbroken takes, which sort of display a sort of interconnectedness(if thats a word D of his characters or the distance between them. to me the camera or the visual speaks of something that the characters are not saying words. Fincher's best work to me is Zodiac. Whether its punch drunk love, there will be blood, magnolia you see this happening consistently and still is unique.In essence, he uses every part of movie making to indulge in emotions. probably ,I am lacking proper vocabulary to make my point come across. In a nut shell, i feel he uses the entire canvass of the film to make emotions not just form the characters, or the words, but include the surroundings. Whether its Sergio Leonne, Kubrick, Tarkovsky, hitchcock, scorecese, Altmant(ofcourse missing many others in the list) they have tried their best to get it there. David lynch movies are not for everyone but elephant man, wild at heart, blue velvet, eraserhead and twin peaks; series & movie can be enjoyed by all. I have watched only two of his movies - There will be blood and Boogie Nights..I really liked Boogie Nights, There will be Blood was good in parts. If you see both the movies, they follow a similar mise-en-scene. A bravura opening scene, downfall of a man, descent into madness etc etc. Btw - do people remember the long take opening shot in Boogie Nights, keka shot. Magnolia DVD undhi, choodali oka roju. PTA has been a bit irregular and inconsistent, so can't rate him as high as Fincher and Nolan etc. But just like Nolan, Fincher, PTA is an auteur, without seeing the movie one can say that this is a PTA movie.
I have not watched much of Lynch - i think i have seen only one movie of his which i did not get. But i would rate Fincher and Nolan on par, can't compare them as they make different kinds of movies and in my view they are the best in Hollywood as of now. Fincher somehow is not put on the same pedestal as Nolan, because he has stayed away from superhero kinda movies, he does not have a big fanboy cult. | ||

vunkls, naaku ayithe the Master kooda super anipinsindhi... there are many things i liked about the movie, i feel that is one of the better movies i have seen in recent times. Hoffman, pheonix were at their best potraying the cult leader and illusioned/disillusioned follower. the depravity of war torn follower, violent bursts and fixation on his weaknesses, rightly identified by the cult leader to forge a complicated yet interesting relationship between them. cinematography is top notch. i feel the underlying sub-text of FAITH being a cause and cure for broken minds, and then how repairing the past, and his memories keep catching up to show a different side of his new faith. i agree its slow paced and might not be liked by all... nevertheless to me, its quite a good one. | ||

I was watching There will be blood, again on saturday night, lost count on the number of times I have watched this specatacle. I think PTA is one director who is one step above the rest of the directors in his generation. It might offend some Nolan's, Taranitno's or Aronofsky's fans, but to me he is definitely someone who creates amazing visual sub-texts that can keep lingering in your minds for longer times after watching a movie. I do not like to compare works of art, but eventually at some point the feeble mind gets into this guess work at to why i feel better about some over the contemporary works. Nolan has his own style, but his prowess i feel is more towards the writing aspect and story boarding. So is Tarantino's. Arfonofsky on the other hand is a genious in his own ways, but to me personally Paul Thomas Anderson work is much more unique and is thought provoking.. May be im on a high, but i feel some of his shots or kubrick-isk. Whether its magnolia, There will be blood, The Master , boogie nights - they left something to think for me, the characters are not every man/woman but still feel real. Along with scorecese he is one of current directors, whose movies i dont want to miss. |
