But meeru cheppedi edi kottaga telusukondi kadu kada- marriage has always been a gamble , arranged marriage even more so. It works for couples who learn to adjust and make most of the cards life dealt them - if either is not willing to adjust , trouble is bound to happen..
In old days exit was not an option so people, mostly women, had to take abuse , not a great situation so exit was made easier and more acceptable. On the flip side extra easy exit unte , the drive to adjust to meet the commitment reduces...
yeah - in this short current period women who want to take the guy to the cleaners have it easy with the laws, and there are some who are doing it whether out of spite or greed - unfortunately your generation of guys is paying for the sins of the previous generations where perfectly able and earning men saw dowry as easy money and tried to extract it by hook or crook...
Laws are made to take care of majority of victims - and harassed women still outnumber harassed men - when that numerical balance shifts the laws will also get adjusted.
What you cannot refute is marriages do work for a huge majority of people .
Risks to marriages have increased with time - due to lack of support systems, conflicting priorities, distractions etc...which means couples have to work harder to nurture the relationship ..., and now atleast for people whose marriages don't work, there are alternatives...
End of the day people can try to mitigate risks in life but life does not come with any guarantees, in relationships or anything else

Value is always an interesting concept, whether it is in economics, education, society in general philosophy. More so when the conflict is between individual and societal patterns. there is always friction between these, and like you have mentioned both adapt and adopt because of these friction.
barring one point of yours, i feel i am an agreement with many things you have mentioned. western society tweaked with the concept of marriage and going no where ani, i don't think its the society that tweaks things, its the individuals who tweak it, and society reacts to it. and for good or bad, and eventually for the good, even indian systems are getting tweaked. what was the need of laws protecting females? if indian systems did not need tweaking, such laws wouldnt have a part to play.
if a system exists it keeps changing to make itself relevant to changing times(doesnt mean its always linear). some happen without causing much notice, some happen violently. infact it has been tweaked quite often in india, from stopping child marriages, to allowing widow marriages, polygamy to monogamy. |

Maanas, It is not about being insured. In the timespan, you are at a phase where law worked against you. But let me step you few years back.
1. Why do you think the Female infanticide was so rampant in part. Middle and poor class parent were not confident of providing good life to their daughter in fear of dowry.
2. up untill late 80's check how many daughter-in-laws are killed for dowry. This has become so rampant that kitchen mishaps became common. Gas banda pellatam chala common ayyipoyindhi..
3. Aada pilla pelli ante vennu lo nunchi shivers vache paristhithi. The social problem of dowry was so rampant. there were several social workers who dedicate their life for this cause.
4. Aada pillalaki asthi lo vaata ledhu.. that left them financially vulnerable.(until NTR changed it.. Mahaanubavudu!! I still dont know if that is being implemented every where)
Pelli chesi aadaapillani in-laws intiki pampatiniki bayapade timezone pass ayyam manam. There was a need of hour to protect women and thus the dowry harasmment law was born. satha koti upayam's ki anantha koti apayam's vunnattu.. it is being missued. the more and more the misuse is evident, it will get corrected.
Divorce lo both partners get affected. there are no insurances. law only protects to some extent.
I am sorry to discuss personal stuff but will make one expection in your case, to complete my point. YOu expressed frustration is towards the dowry harassment law not the marraige system itself. What if the dowry harassment law was not there. would it have reduced your hostility towards marraige system ??
All these laws are created to protect the system. They will be 'Tweak'ed as we evolve and social situations change. They should not be impetus to break the marraige system.
Some people premise that marraige happens between two random people is not entirely true(Partially true). It is not as random as it appears. I have posted about this sometime back and I will again when I find some time.. |

evariki madhya occasional differences vunadau cheppandi.. I have differences with every one my mother, father, brother, sister and even kids.. kaani we will work thru them. Why spouse is the only one that should be singled out. Its extremely rare to have two human beings with identical everythings. we learn to live with each other..
Compromise ane mataki konchem Ibbandikaram ga anipisthe.. think of it as adaptability..antha positive gane kanapadathundhi..
Bottomline entante..In my opinion, marraige institution is proven to hold society together. To keep it, we all have to work hard. Few failures should not define its fate. affect ayyina vallaki idhi accept cheyyadam kastam gane vuntadhi...but few accidents ayyayi ani flight journey bad analemu kadha...
Western society has been tweaking this idea for quite some time.. they are getting nowhere. Like any problem even marraige will have alternatives but consequences may be worse.
