Letter bomb Justice Sriramulu probe results into Babji letters may prove crucial for N.T. Rama Rao In his quest for dramatic effect, N.T. Rama Rao may finally have gone too far. This is being revealed in an inquiry ordered by the state Government to investigate the death of Mallela Babji, a young man who had assaulted Rama Rao more than four years ago in Hyderabad. The matter took an unexpected turn when two handwritten letters discovered in Babji's ROOM by the police were made public last fortnight. One of the letters said that the assault on January 9, 1984, had been stage-managed by Rama Rao to win public sympathy. The Telugu Desam chief had escaped with a two-cm-long cut on his thumb, when Babji, 22 - a self-proclaimed Rama Rao fan - had lunged at him. The attack occurred when Rama Rao was watching the first anniversary celebrations of his ministry in Hyderabad's Lal Bahadur Stadium. Babji stated in one of the letters that he was offered Rs.3 lakh to stage the assault. Eventually, however, he was paid only Rs.30,000. The letter also claimed that the entire plan had been drawn up by the chief minister and his son-in-law Chandrababu Naidu. Rama Rao, it said, had even cut his thumb in advance to pretend injury. Interestingly, the letters were suppressed after they were found by the police and Vijayawada's Executive Magistrate T.B. Banerji because of the fact that Rama Rao, Naidu and a former police intelligence chief, K. Vijayarama Rao could get involved in the messy affair. The chief minister's assailant was found hanging from a ceiling fan on November 30 last year in ROOM no 14 of Vijayawada's Sri Durga Lodge. The letters were made public on June 11 by Justice Chintala Sriramulu, 62, a former high court judge. Banerji had presented them to Sriramulu, who had been appointed by the state Government three months ago to inquire into Babji's death. The results of Sriramulu's investigation into the Babji letters could prove crucial for Rama Rao. The second letter was akin to a suicide note - Babji asked his parents to pardon him for giving them endless trouble. He also said that the confession he had earlier made to Vijayarama Rao, owning complete responsibility for planning and carrying out the assault, was part of the scheme. The disclosures, predictably, had the Congress(I) calling for the chief minister's resignation. But Rama Rao remained nonchalant: "Let the Congress clean and set its own house in order. I am the people's man." His ministers too rose to their leader's defence - the chief minister was away campaigning for the by-elections when the storm broke. Forest Minister Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu accused the Congress(I) of launching a slander campaign to counter Rama Rao's popularity. He also pointed out that Babji had died in a lodge owned by a Congress(I) sympathiser. Three other ministers and two Telugu Desam MLAs declared that the letters had been written by Babji under pressure as "the wording style was that of a legal brain". The denials have only added to the mystery which surrounds the entire incident. Significantly, Babji's was a quick trial. Rama Rao appeared personally in court and appealed to the judge "to take a lenient view and pardon Babji". And in a rather unusual development, he was released a year after his arrest in Hyderabad. The judge adjusted his sentence against the year he had spent as an undertrial. "The accused had not intended to cause bodily harm to the chief minister," the judge concluded in his verdict. After his release in 1985, Babji worked briefly as a gardener with the Guntur Zilla Parishad. While working there, he once tried to unsuccessfully commit suicide by consuming rat poison. Police records also show that he had been involved in a petty burglary. Mallela Babj in custody: Stunning claimSriramulu's task is not an easy one. Though the original three-month term of the inquiry ended on June 21, the judge has sought an extension till year-end. To get to the root of the mystery, Sriramulu will first have to confirm whether Babji had actually written the letters. The verifications so far have been made by comparing the letters with specimens of Babji's writing found in his ROOM and available in the Vijayawada police records. Sriramulu has asked handwriting experts to compare the letter with Babji's writings available in the Hyderabad court and in places where he had worked. And as the inquiry progresses, Rama Rao - in spite of all his nonchalance - is bound to be on tenterhooks.
