Though people advice against politics, i found it works very well with slightly older people, especially if you are meeting people from other countries. They find it especially sweet if someone from outside knows so much about their political scenario. Never try to use these irregular meetings for business purposes or trying to plug a deal. Just use these to build a rapport and network. With a CEO or a senior guy, don't try to talk sitcoms, that is just being trivial unless you know from your experience that he is very passionate about it. For instance ma ex-CEO undevadu, though he was a part time DJ, i never talked music with him. Only after we both quit, we talk music. I was and still am a bad public speaker though i have improved a lot over the years. My singular confidence comes from knowledge, knowledge is power ani oorike analedhu. Jeeves tell Wooster to just look down at the school kids as a bunch of unknowing idiots or something similar. In most of the cases, i know more about general subjects than most others in the audience, unless it is a very technical subject. Whether it is Ukraine to Scotland, tennis to golf, weather to Shakespeare, anniti meedha pattu untali. Of course, if one is a natural public speaker, then one does need to work this hard. But for people who aren't, say like me, all this helps. For instance, i were at the •••, i would ask him about his favourite zoos in the world, what kind of animals his kids like to see, about India being land of tigers, how a tiger ate someone in a ••• in India, how you took a tiger safari, difficult to catch sight of one in the wild etc etc. | ||
