The results were both unexpected and stunning. Barely 100 days into its spectacular ascendancy at the Centre, BJP received a sobering reality check on Tuesday when it was roundly defeated in the assembly byelections in the states of UP, Rajasthan and Gujarat — the very states which propelled it to office in Delhi in May. In an outcome that was interpreted as a defeat for the politics of polarization, BJP lost 12 of the 24 seats it had held. It was routed in UP and Rajasthan, while it put up only a sub-par performance in Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat. In West Bengal, however, it positioned itself as Mamata Banerjee's main rival, winning one seat and narrowly losing the Chowringhee seat to Trinamool Congress. Coming soon after two rounds of defeats — the first the Uttarakhand election and the second in the bypolls in Bihar, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh — this round of defeats, the worst so far, was a stinging slap on the BJP's wrist just when it was showing signs of complacency. It could strengthen the perception that the Modi magic is on the wane and people are getting restive over the delayed redemption of his "acche din" pledge. Out of the 32 assembly seats across nine states, BJP won 12, Samajwadi Party eight, Congress seven, while TDP, Trinamool Congress, AIUDF and CPM bagged one each. One seat in Sikkim was won by an Independent. BJP retained the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat, vacated by Modi, although with a reduced margin. While Modi had won the seat by 5.7 lakh votes, BJP's Ranjanben Bhatt sailed past her Congress rival Narendra Rawat by over 3.29 lakh votes. In another Lok Sabha bypoll, Tej Pratap Singh, the grand nephew of Mulayam Singh Yadav, defeated BJP's Prem Singh Shakya in Mainpuri, an SP stronghold, by a margin of over 3.21 lakh votes. In UP, where the party ran a shrill and polarizing campaign against the "appeasement of Muslims" by the ruling Samajwadi Party and racheted up emotions against inter-community marriages — dubbed "love jihad" — BJP lost eight of the 10 seats it had held to SP. Its ally, Apna Dal, lost another one, Rohiniya, which is part of Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency, Varanasi. Mayawati's BSP had stayed away from these polls, making it a straight fight between SP and BJP. What went wrong with Modi govt in 100 days? BJP suffered humiliation also in Rajasthan, losing three of the four seats in the state where it had swept assembly elections. The miserable show defied the pattern where byelections tend to be decided in the ruling party's favour. The three seats it lost were won by Congress, a party still nursing the wounds of the heavy defeat it suffered in May, boosting its morale after it appeared to have hit an all-time low.
