you should pay money for atleast the material costs involved. There are many full time teachers and they need to pay rents, buy food and travel. To anyone interested, here is a good link on instructions to practice Zen. http://zmm.mro.org/teachings/meditation-instructions/ It is best to meet a qualified teacher and take instructions from him. But any instructions involve focusing on breath as a basic concentration practice for a few years followed by a wisdom practice. Kalikalam, I don't want this thread to be wasted in our arguments. If you think all systems are equal and same, well let it be. I have already stated my views. Or is this more of a personal attack or agenda to prove or disprove each other? I agree with you.Again, that is your personal experience and need not necessarily be for others. I had the book of Nisargadatta Maharaj you mentioned(Telugu translation by Neelamraju Laxmi prasad)and I really liked it, but when recommend the same book to others , some of them said it is just a piece of junk.Same case with OSHO too.Few of them liked and few of them did not. I still like UG krishna morrthy, but none in my circle liked him and they actually hate him. He declared "This self realaization concept is just fraud.Theere is nothing to be relaized.The demand for enlightenment was the only thing standing in the way of enlightenment itself, if enlightenment existed at all" | ||

what is wrong for 'paying money' for the education? Even if you go any so called 'Free camps', they got to arrange many things.where they will get money from?some one got to donate money for others. When one can afford, it is better to pay money rather than getting paid by some one else.

Regarding your post 233.Many contradictions in your statements.One time you are telling that we can not judge a teacher, on the other hand you are recommending who is a good spiritual teacher, which system/mediation method is good.Again, As you liked some kind of system, you may not like the other systems.That's why the famous 'Vignaana Bharaiva Tantra' got 101 meditation tehcniques. Masters very well know that one meditation technique will not suit universally to everybody. If you are feeling less effective about one particular meditation technique, that may not be a right tool for you(only for you).I don't think it is right to criticise other techniques. So, how many of your group got enlightened so far if that is such a powerful way of meditation?? | ||

Hi kalikalam, As students we cannot really say if a teacher is fully enlightened or not. It is not a good idea to judge a teacher by his behavior either. For example the famous Nisargadatta was a chain smoker but is widely accepted as one of the great non-dual teachers of all time. His book "I am That" (available freely online) is a spiritual classic. Many great teachers were involved in scandals in the latter part of their lives but their teachings nevertheless have been right on spot. E.g. Chogyam Trungpa, Mahesh Yogi (Transcendental Meditation), Rajneesh Osho, Mauezemi Roshi etc... I am highly skeptical of most Indian systems (no offense meant, I am an Indian/Hindu too). I am highly skeptical of any systems that involve paying money for the teachings, too much guru dependence (guru awakens you through his power) or guru worship, no solid system of practices, don't have a good lineage of teachers, dont have good exemplary senior students. I find mainstream Budhhist (there are many but primarily Zen/Mahayana & Vipassana/Theravada are good) systems to be more authentic. They have a clearly published lineage of teachers (from Buddha till your own teacher) and the transmission is authentic. A very direct way to judge is by directly sitting in meditation with the teacher or group and see how it feels. I have found that my meditation is much more deeper when I sit at a Zen center compared to when I sit at home. I like Adyashanti and find his speeches effective. But none of those teachers who don't have a good system of practices that you can follow are going to help. He talks impressively but I am not sure how genuine he is. Just because someone is impressive or charismatic doesn't necessarily mean he is a good teacher. There are many non-dual teachers who get stuck at some point on the journey (not fully awakened) and can still talk very impressively. They say you are already enlightened and there is nothing else to be done. No meditation or no spiritual practices are needed. Eckhart Tolle for example is very popular, charismatic and falls into this category. Jiddu Krishnamurti, UG Krishnamurti, Adyashanti, Gangaji. Search for any of them and you will find their talks very impressive. But these speeches take you nowhere. It feels good to listen to them but if you want to make any progress you need to practice. All of the self-inquiry or Jnana Yoga crap comes only after you wake up to a certain level. Before that it is all some mental bullshit. I understand Jaggi Vasudev has some practices and methods but I don't understand why you need to pay to learn them. That makes me feel suspicious about his motivation. I would vote for SRF Kriya Yoga or aypsite.com free practices over them any day. | ||
