don't color his view. ofcourse a lot depends on the kind of literature he has read and given the time constraints, there's only so much one can absorb. I would suggest telling him that he should not reach any conclusion on the issue yet, and to let him have an open mind about discovering something new which may change his opinion later. that will instil a healthy sense of skepticism and scientific curiosity. also, ensure the british angle is covered since that was the source of the problem. if you can, let him talk to a native palestinian and a native israeli .. | ||

My son is writing something for his school essay, it's a bit complicated topic is what I felt, they have to side either Palestine or Isreal and write up why they are supporting them. Being that they are just 12 year old and is not exposed much to this particular conflict so far. He compiled his views and they are more sympathizing towards Palestine instead of taking any particular side. He didn’t appreciate the UN’s way of creating a state carving out Palestine’s land. Is there anything wrong in his view? Being in a country that supports Isreal and with all the muslim hatred going on in this country, should he be told to change his view and steer him towards supporting Isreal in his essay? Some parts of his essay: First of all, Palestinians lived in the area where Israel currently is for 2000 years. Secondly, when the UN decided to split Palestine into a Jewish state, the land wasn’t split evenly. Finally, when Israel was fully formed, Arabs were treated like second-class citizens and received much prejudice. A long time ago, Jews left the land that is now Israel and did not show any signs of returning. Arabs, who were looking for a homeland, found a great piece of land and decided to occupy it, without any use of force. Now, 2000 years into the future, Jews are claiming that the land is theirs and that Arabs have no claim in the land. When the UN decided to split part of Palestine to make a Jewish state, they made the initial borders in favor of Israel. This sparked some anger among Arabs, and the decided to have non- violent protests. This is a major point. Many people think that Muslims attacked immediately and without any mobilization of the Israeli army. In fact, Muslims only started jihad (Holy War) after Israel attacked and seized more land past the UN partitions. So, to start of, Israel gets favored and starts out with more land than Palestine. And so on... Where did he get wrong, may the information presented to him was not complete to take the right side? Please help me understand or if any of you have any good idea of any book that he should read through, please suggest. |
