Raina too is ugly as a package, but in areas like his cover drives because he is a natural rightie, he is able to make up for his natural lack of flair. The point is not that all left handers are elegant (a la Warner or Raina) or that right handers are not. Azhar for me is the most elegant player there was ...the simple point is that the %age of lefthanders who are more pleasing to the eye is more than the %age of right handers who are so. Probably elegant is not the most accurate word to use, probably it should be ability to time better, appear to use less force etc etc. Because of their ability to see the ball more clearly (because of the lesser parallax error), they have a lot more time to play their shots and their seeming casuality. Again i am not saying that wrist position, quick reflexes are less important but only that they are more important to a right hander than a leftie. this seems to be the bottomline. kaani, square cut, pull, hook can all be very elegant shots with the bottom hand coming in heavy. I think this so-called elegance has more to do with the symmetry of body position and balance than anything else. an azzu glance or his square cut is any day more elegant to me than a ganguly cover drive. | ||

Okay. The answer goes like this. Not my theory but from the famous Aussie writer Jack Fingleton who wrote a long article about it. I read it in Ram Guha's Picador Book on Cricket Anthology. Firstly - most of the elegant left-hand batsman that we can name of Lara, Ganguly, Gower, etc are all natural right handers. They bowl, field with their right hand. So their main arm is their right arm. When a left hander faces the bowler, the top hand now is their right arm, which is their main arm and hence they are able to generate an excessive amount of force without a lot of exertion. So their off drives, cover drives, are all casually and lazily elegant. In the same vein, a natural left hander who also bats left handed will not show the same elegance as his strong hand viz his left hand is the bottom hand. Bottom handed shots are less elegant and is just an application of brute force. So in these cases, the left hander is no different from a right hander. A couple of you have come close here but did not mention the natural right-handed nature of many left handers which is key to the issue here. Second - none of you have covered eyesight. Same as above, the natural right hander who is playing left handed see the ball with his right eye which is the stronger eye (less parallax error). So he is able to catch the ball earlier and also gauge the line of the ball earlier, hence they are able to time their hits very sweetly. If you want to check which eye is more accurate, close your right eye and point your finger at something on the wall, open both the eyes and note how far your finger is from the correct position on the wall of the object. Now do the same with your left eye. You will find that the left eye (for right handers) is inaccurate by a fair margin. So because of better eye sight and the power of the top hand, most left handers are quite elegant. Border - he was a natural lefty, that was one reason he was so in elegant... | ||

One thing I have noticed over the years is.. Lefties cover drive kottinappudu..they don't lean into the shot as much as right handers do, makes it look effortless..most of them hit the drives from a semi-standing position, even the front foot ones..Ganguly,Lara and others you have seen. For me individual shots are the one's that are beautiful, any player who can play with enough grace will appeal. For Left handers, the right hand is the one doing most work, and for the right handers, left is the one doing more work. which ever is the stronger hand of the player dominates the style of the play. I think there are three things that can make a shot look beautiful . The most beautiful shot is probably the cover drive, lefties with powerful right hand, can play this aerial shot better, and looks more appealing, and most right handers hook or pull is more beautiful for the same reason. The next closest thing is timing.. players who are better timers, make the shorts look effortless, and it follows a very natural rythm. seems like a dance movement. Third is the angle at which a ball is met. From a viewer perspective, the angle between the contact of the bat and ball, and the relative position of the batsmen makes for the image. Left handers might be at advantage here, because of the angles they can create, which seem completely different from a right hander to which we are more used to. Ofcourse, there are some batsmen who are the brad pitts and mahesh bobs of warald cricket in terms of style, who produce pure magic I would gladly watch a Lara innings when is in song, than a sridevi song nenu choodani generation lo or antha ga gurthu lenidhi gower, sobers etcetera ni theesthe Lara, tharvaatha in no particular order Azzu bhai, VVS, saeed anwar, mark waugh, .. inka gurthu vasthe list edathaaan. | ||
