I have been an atheist for most of my life. That being said, i do believe that India has to be a Hindu country as the fundamental ethos and character of the country is built around the philosophy of Hinduism. It is not a religion based thing or who we worship, it is what we are as an individuals and as a society. People say that Gandhiji propagated non-violence, non-violence is a Hindu way of life, gandhi just co-opted it and made it his own. India has never gone to war with any country without provocation. That is just not what we are. These are things that are not in the Githa or elsewhere, it is just written into our sub-conscious. The flexibility and tolerance that Hinduism has can't be found even to any small extent in other religions. That is because we are not a revealed religion but an evolved religion. We tend to imbibe new ways of thinking and new gods into our pantheon as there is nothing in Hinduism which proscribes or subscribes explicitly to any particular order of things. That is the great strength of Hinduism, rigidity only breaks up things, elasticity and flexibility makes things supple and long lasting. Muslims and Christians have other promised lands. We don't. India has to be the heart and soul of Hinduism and conversions whether through the sword or through word are a danger to our country. We will end up as another Nigeria probably. | ||

This is correct observation. Inka bigger reason post-independence starting from constitution to our policies, conscioius decisions taken for "social equality" and "social justice".
