Koshish, Aandhi, Mausam, Kinara, Namkeen, Lekin

There is a lesser known Gulzar movie, if there is such a thing, called Kitaab. One of my favourite movies as a kid, it is about a boy who runs away from school and family. Total fun...it has this brilliant nonsense song that only Gulzar could write - Aa aa ee eee master jee ki nikli chitti..and another lovely song that RD sang - Dhanno kee aankhon mein....

Most fans find it difficult to say which is their favourite song of Gulzar.

And I am one of them...I love so many of his songs and the emotions they evoke - I cannot pick few let alone one :-)

Movies too - Ijaazat is beautiful and poignant .. and so are Koshish, Aandhi, Mausam, Kinara, Namkeen, Lekin each a completely different subject, elevated by the writing and the sensitivity in building the characters..:-)

Here's a fantastic compilation of the songs he's written - one line bits of what must be over a hundred songs but a trip down memory lane - hats off to the compiler :-)

wrote songs about personal relationships beauty bereavement crazy evenings strange mornings and about all the things a typical middle class person fantasizes...

nothing about the poor poverty politics class struggle or ugly !

in many cases, music and singing was fine though !

overall, overrated by the middle class goats...

Anand_n:

he is the one person I am truly a bhakt of so I can go overboard

Oh yes..same here..i can keep talking about his lyrics for days on end...it is a tribute to his versatility and genius that my toddler kid's favourite song is Lakdi ki kaathi...the sheer range Gulzar traverses from writing sublime lyrics for Bimal Roy to nonsense verse is immense..

Most fans find it difficult to say which is their favourite song of Gulzar...i can clearly say which is mine - it is the Dil Doondtha Hai song from Mausam....while most lyricists describe an emotion or expression, Gulzar paints a picture here which is turn evokes an emotion...he does not describe nostalgia -

Yaa garmiyon ki raath jo purvayiyan chale
Tandi safed chadaron pein jagen der thak
Thaaron ko dekhthe rahen chath par pade huye..

These lines always gives me goosebumps as they describe so accurately the summers in my home town....

My favourite movie is also undoubtedly Ijaazat - the screenplay is deft, it is structurally difficult and experimental, the ending is sheer genius....one gets a lump in the throat...and of course the songs are genius...

Maine tere liye hi {saat rang ke sapne} chune ...my very first favorite song in life at the age of 5 , started my love of rainbows and they came to signify hope, dreams, joy, even today a rainbow brings back this song to mind :-)

And he continues that satrangi refrain in many of his later songs :-)

I better stop now - he is the one person I am truly a bhakt of so I can go overboard :-)

these awards are feeble for his abilities and achievements ..
the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada
