Web development was hot at that time in the industry. At the same time, there are quite a few telecom companies in my geographical area. I could have stayed in Telecom field if I wanted to. I thought telecom business knowledge is my strong suite and I can always fall back on it if I wanted to. I wanted to get exposure to web development as well, so chose to go with a web development project opportunity I got then. | ||

Last 2 weeks have been quite interesting. I joined a firm as intern programmer in telecom startup 11 years back. I was hired by a gentleman over a phone interview, my experience in telecom, and the technologies was negligible, but my grad projects and Phd(back then a Phd student) thesis convinced this man to hire me, even though i was upfront about the lack of knowledge in the projects i was being hired for. From Day 1, this gentleman was a great Mentor and he taught me everything i needed, and we worked very closely for a couple of years, during which we developed couple of products which were kind of the backbone of the future of the company. At this juncture, there was a conflict among the senior managers, and my mentor left the organization with bitterness. I was the primary from then on the future versions of the products and extended products that were added on. Also developed a few other systems related to the industry. I was told not to keep any contacts with anybody from that organization, and i had to sign legal documentation that I will not join any competitors until 2 years if I leave the company by myself. I was to give 6 month prior notification if i decide to move on. so there was no contact with him for the past 6 years or so. Last mid-year, one of the main investors passed away. His daughter came on board, and the CEO(also the Founder) found her too intrusive in day to day affairs and decided to move out. A new CEO came on board, and recently struck a deal with the main competitor and a merger has been finalized. Once the legal process completed, I was one of the members of the team to consolidate the systems across the new organization, and thats when I found out my mentor was hired by the competitor, and he was implementing the same systems I was working on our side. Now only one of the two systems will prevail, and looks like only of us will be in the organization . Both teams are trying hard to see that their setup prevails, and the chatter surrounding it is immense and is getting quite passionate, competitive and frustrating(for me atleast). Some of the meetings end in heated exchanges between the teams. Never thought a day would come, where I would have to duke it out with my mentor. Last night we met for dinner, and talked about the olden days. Next month is going to be pretty interesting. Couple of years back I wanted to move out, and work on something new, but was offered a new project and a new role, so continued.
