Onlytruth:

last but not least

Politicians are doing business and businessmen are becoming politicians. Is this healthy?

It's good if a businessman turns into a politician. No harm if a politician does business on the side. We have done it as a family for 21 years. Who else will feed us on a day-to-day basis? I have problem with the way the nexus is built. We are very clear - business has nothing to do with politics, and vice-versa . So, if you maintain an arm's length transactions, there's nothing wrong with it. They can co-exist . But I have a problem with the nexus. The nexus is the quid pro quo - you give me this, and I'll give you that. Now, that is dangerous, and that's what we have seen in our state.

Lokesh about Rahul:

I think Congress lost 20 more seats. That's my opinion. I think as a leader he is sort of struggling with walking the talk. That's his challenge. He has great ideas but I think as a party he has not done it. If you want to be accountable , you start from home.

BEST ANSWER OF THE DAY

Are you doing UAT in-house or have you hired any software company?

No. It is completely inhouse activity. The party workers have set up the data and ran some scenarios in test constituencies and the results have been very positive. We have strategically chosen Vijayawada and Guntur constituencies for test environment.

Are you good at SQL ? Can you deliver a SQL query in your uncle's style for our readers?

(chuckles). let me try

Does it bother you that you could be seen as another example of dynastic politics?

Dynastic politics happens globally. It's not just prevalent in India. It gives you an edge. But if you can't deliver , you can't succeed in politics. Who knows, if my father was not what he is today, or the leader that he is today, I wouldn't have probably joined politics. In India, legacies have had a bad reputation. Look at Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew's son (Lee Hsien Loong), I think, is doing a phenomenal job. The country keeps moving forward. It's easy to say that everyone's corrupt, that every political family is the same. That's the unfortunate thing

What are the numbers today, at this time?

The problem is it depends on which way we are going to look at it. Are we looking at a combined state or are we looking at a bifurcated state? If we are going for a bifurcated state, then in Seemandhra, TDP is a sure win. Telangana is where we have a challenge. In south Telangana we are exceptionally strong. In north Telangana, we are weak in pockets. So we need to work on north Telangana and revive our activity there.

What do you think of the Aam Aadmi Party?

It's too early to say anything. They have done a lot of great things. They have also done a lot of things in the wrong way. But as a political party we have learnt from the great things they have done. They have used technology very well, they have used social media very well. They have used callbacks very well. They have harnessed the power of volunteers very well. So those are all learnings for us. In terms of success, I think it's too premature, so let's wait and watch.

TDP's data analysis outfit counts among the most sophisticated in India:

How has it been for you, getting yourself closely involved in politics?

It's been very exciting. One of the biggest activities we are doing is big data analytics to define our battlegrounds . And we are doing a lot of fine-tuning to understand the mood of people and sentiment analysis.

Can you give an example of how you are using data?

Certain things I can't say, certain things I can say. I think the first thing is we start with electoral voter rolls, post that we do a lot of analysis of age; we do certain analysis of caste. Whether we accept it or not, Indian politics works in a certain manner so we understand that and we take socio-economic classification, occupation, and based on historical trends since 1983, we believe that the battleground in every constituency is very clearly defined. You have booths that you are going to lose for sure and you would have booths that you would win for sure. That's one... second, we do constant field work. The feedback mechanism from the field is quite strong, so we use that analysis to see what commitments the party make which will move the needle up and down. So we equip our candidates, our district leaders, and our party president with the right tools and information to feel the pulse of the people.

Given that the overall situation is so fluid, so how does data help you?

Politically in Seemandhra, it is quite clear for TDP. In Telangana, there is a certain sense of fluidity. We actually build that fluidity and that's when the system performs. So in the midst of all this fluidity when you actually go and do your vote share questions, we know what the vote share by booth is. So in three rounds, you can actually figure out the temper of the constituency. We use that as the base and we work on how many votes you need to win and where do you get these votes from. We can today actually target which household we need to get the votes from. We have only built about 60% of the constituencies, so we are building the balance that will enable us to target the households that need to be targeted. We exactly know where we are strong and where we are weak. Because of historical trends and local caste equations, local influences, we know whatever you do, you are not going to win those areas. But this enables us to fine-tune that in saying that 'These are the 20 booths out of the 230 that you need to focus on' and then you are done.

Is this an in-house operation or do you have a partner?

Completely in-house . It was built for the party. We have been at it for about 18 months now. So it's been completely built for the party. We have hired resources and people and a lot of volunteers. People from Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, all of them have come on board building this. We are also using Facebook feed now. A lot of people who say "I like TDP" on the Facebook page clearly mean they are very strong followers. A guy who says he likes XYZ of my competition, and we know they are not going to vote for us. So we know exactly how the battleground is.
