The veteran BJP leader L K Advani has given a new twist to the Telangana debate. Though his party has been unequivocally supporting the creation of separate Telangana state at the earliest, Advani added a spin to the party's position by saying that a resolution has to be passed by the state assembly. He pointed out that the formation of three states-- Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand-- during the NDA regime in 2000 was smooth and easy because all the three state Assemblies had passed unanimous resolutions favouring creation of new states. He faulted the UPA Government for the prevailing confusion over Telangana issue. Speaking at a programme in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, Advani said the central government could not act properly while taking a decision on the Telangana issue. "The uncertainty emerged soon after the announcement by the CWC on Telangana. This decision was taken by the Congress to benefit in the next elections. It has plunged the state into chaos,â the BJP veteran said. Advani remarked that the government had failed to take the people from all the regions into confidence before arriving at the decision. As a leader who has seen the rough and tumble of politics since the first- ever General elections in India in 1952, Advani said he had never come across such a commotion inside and outside of Parliament and state Assembly on the issue of carving out a new state. The recent statements of other BJP leaders were also equally significant. Addressing his first-ever rally in Hyderabad on August 11, partyâs Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who was then BJP election campaign chief, said that Congress has created bad blood between Telugu people. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj had also disapproved the way in which a decision on Telangana was taken by the Congress party, though she added that she remains a votary of separate Telangana. |
