At a fundamental level, our reforms over the past 20 years have been by stealth - it never acquired the broad social consensus...we have done the easy FDI reforms but have stayed away from the land, labour, administrative reforms..in fact FDI gave crony capitalists a free reign where local business people with politicans in hand can earn windfall gains in resource based industries.. Take Airtel for instance, most of the success of companies like this is due to political proximity, managing regulatory hurdles etc. But once they go in for acquisitions abroad, they are gross failures because they don't have any political power in Africa or Asia etc. Similarly for everyone who does acquisitions abroad - that is why Indian companies' acquisitions abroad have been disasters. Over the last few years, because of Lokayukta, CAG, Supreme Court etc. the routes to exploit these resource based economies have reduced and Indian industrialists do not have avenues, knowledge, skills to build industries in these changed circumstances. And because of these very issues, our CAD has increased. Not gold. We are sitting on some of the largest coal reserves, but have to import gold because of the coal-gate scandals. Similarly for iron-ore. Crony capitalism and corruption are directly responsible for CAD. Couple all of this high fiscal deficits, rampant populism like loan waivers, food security bills etc. and nobody has a sense when the situation will improve. Until now, people had some hope that we will get something right, but slowly they are giving up hope. In fact, even the Indian industrialists are not investing in India, they are investing abroad. When at critical times like this the government talks about food security bills, Telangana etc. that show that this is not even the priority for them.. | ||

Brazil atleast has good social infrastructure like transport, roads, ports which are much better than us..i went to Brazil recently and was blown away by the metro, museums, public parks, etc. Their per capita income is 5 times that of India, if they have a downturn of an year or two they can always come back. Their GDP growth is low this year, but their unemployment is still only 6%, inflation is lower than India's, govt. is less corrupt, have lots of oil resources...i would say India's case is a bit like Malaysia's after their response to the 1998 Asian crisis - Malaysia never recovered from their response to the crisis, Indonesia did the right thing and has shown great growth because they took the right steps post the crisis. | ||
