SC on Padmanabha Swamy Temple sixth chamber Fri 08th Jul 2011 06:34 PM supreme court today restrained the seven member committee from opening the sixth vault or Kallara B of Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. Issuing the verdict on petition filed by filed by Raja Marthanda Varma, erstwhile Prince of Travancore and Kerala Government, the bench of justices RV Raveendran and AK Patnaik requested them to come out with appropriate suggestions ensuring sanctity and security of ancient temple. There are six vaults (hidden chambers), from A to F and only Vault B is still to be opened. This vault has special locks and no body want to break them. So temple authorities are getting experts to examine them as key for this vault is missing. While temple authorities are taking the help of traditional locksmiths to get duplicate keys, the royal family members of Travancore, being traditional custodians of temple are apprehensive over the use of machinery to break open the vault as hammering this ancient vault could shake the temple’s foundation or a model of a snake (Naga Bandham) on this door prompts about bad omen. Other sources say that says that there is a tunnel at the bottom of the chamber that leads to the sea. supreme court said that sixth vault (Kallara B) will not be opened till treasure recovered from Kallara A (first five vaults) is videographed, photographed and its inventory is prepared. Next hearing of the case on Vault B is adjourned till July 14 that is coming Thursday. | ||

Its weight in precious metals and carats, estimated to be worth over Rs 1 lakh crore, alone makes the contents of the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple vaults an extraordinary find. However, the treasure's intrinsic value lies elsewhere, with the historical and aesthetic significance of many of the artefacts. They suggest using the treasure as the nucleus of a grand museum, giving Thiruvananthapuram the equivalent of a Louvre in Paris and the British Museum in London. Doing so takes care, among other things, of safeguarding the find. A secure museum is far better than having commandos crawling the lanes of Thiruvananthapuram. Moreover, if the museum matches the scale and significance of the find, it would complement and enhance one of Kerala's principal enterprises - tourism. Patently there's quite a bit of the past to be uncovered given that the relics range from exotic places - Venice for one - and times - such as when Napoleon held sway in distant Europe. Hence a museum would not only enhance our understanding of ourselves but also peoples from all over the globe. After all, Kerala was a centre in international trading networks long before Vasco da Gama brought his baubles to town. The only way of doing justice to the cache is for temple authorities to work with the government. The former shouldn't object to a museum given the Travancore king's long history of thoughtful governance. Meanwhile, only the state can bring in the expertise required. That'll have to be international given the dearth of expertise in the country on how to run even average museums, let alone one that has the potential to rival the Louvre. A temple priest has triggered a fresh bout of excitement with a statement that much more treasure may be lying in the pond in front of the temple, a newspaper has re-published reports about the temple's vault being opened in 1931, and some warn that opening the last remaining vault, marked 'B', could invite either a rush of sea water into the city through underground passages that link the temple and the city to the sea, or bring divine wrath for breaking long-standing tradition. Speculation about the vaults and their surroundings being infested with deadly cobras have the backing of newspaper reportage, with a news item in the 1930s quoting writer Emily Gilchrist Hatch as stating that a group of people who tried to open the vaults in 1908 "fled for their lives" when they found the place infested with cobras. Whether the King Cobra ( Ophiophagus Hannah )) can survive in such vaults is another matter altogether. "Cobras can never be present in those vaults. There is neither enough oxygen to survive there, nor is there any food for them because even rats and other rodents will not be able to stay alive in such conditions", says B Suresh, celebrated snake-catcher of Thiruvananthapuram who goes by the name 'Vava' Suresh. The temple and its trustees were more powerful than the king for centuries before Marthand Varma got a position of authority in the temple trust. The temple trustee council of Eight and half heads ( Eight trustees and half a vote for the king) shows the lack of importance of the king. The trustee council called the Ettara Yogam , due to the vast wealth under its control was powerful enough to manipulate and even eliminate/murder portions of the royal family.. Sensational news flowing from Kerala on padmanabha swamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram is taking a new fold with each day. Experts say that there are six locked vaults hidden in the temple of which five are already opened accumulating to a property pf worth Rs.5 Lakh crores in the form of gold ornaments. Now, experts are trying to open the last one and most crucial one that is sixth depository which is guarded by ‘Naga Bandham.’ Population of Kerala is tensed as disturbing of ‘Naga Bandham’ will be ‘Arishtam’ for the State. Reports say that officials working in counting the worth of these depositories are facing health problems ever since the process has been started. One of the officers on duty had broken the leg and mother of one more officer had a sudden death yesterday. Thought it might be illogical to infer this as an ill effect due to padmanabha swamy’s anger yet orthodox people are feared as what would happen to Kerala. On the other side, Govt. is excited to take the total score to Rs. 10 Lakh Crores by opening this ‘Naga Bandham.’ |
