so what happened really on the last day of the war when kaurava army just had Ashwattama, kripacharya and kritavarma

After seeing Duryodhana down on earth with broken things being hit by bheema on Ashvatthama is filled with rage. He then vows that he will either kill the pandavas or not return back from the battle.

There is a big cause of confusion here, people directly write ashwattama killed everybody in sleep and torched the camps and he thought he had killed the pandavas mistakenly. It is however true that Ashwattama knew that he could not kill the pandavas when krishna was around. It is true that ashwattama attacked the camp at night but he perfectly knew that pandavas were not in the camp. This is clear and very evident when he actually mentions this to Duryodhana after having gone back

He says if you are alive then listen to these words which will be pleasant to hear, on the side of pandavas only 7 are alive now which include the 5 brothers, krishna and satyaki and on our side kripa, kritavarma and myself. I have killed all of the viratas, panchali's sons, dhristyadumna and host of other pandava army by entering their camp in the night.

so he pretty well knew he had killed the sons of pandavas and not pandavas themselves.

Brahmastra hits uttara womb destroying the signifiance of panduva vamsam.

Krishna brought it to life signifying a new life to that child. he is free from all the previous birth connection.

there is a story that says Krishna places his foot on the stillborn baby. there is one more story, which says that Krishna asks anyone who has been a nitya brahmachari all their lives, when touched the still born baby, he would come alive. no one comes forward, and he declares that he who has been accused of having 16000 concubines, will try. and his touch brings the still born baby to life.

okahyderabadi bro,

time unnappudu dheeni meedha mee information ivvandi..its a debatable topic ani antaaru..

Abhimanyu was born in pramadhoota when arjuna married Subhadra on Pramodhoota Vaishakha masam . He was only 16 when he died (no discussions on who got married at 14 please). So when the war happened in Shubhakrita samvatsara margashira masam he was just 16 and had been married for only 6 months ( married in Jyestya masam), uttara was pregnant by 6 months

there are different versions of the episode on how Sri Krishna saved unborn baby

one version says since the bramhastra had already killed the fetus in the womb of uttara. One version is that he asked every body present there that anybody who is a true 'brahmacharya' can revive the child with his touch. The concept of brahmcharya for Krishna who had 8 wives and was mystical lord for 16000 gopikas is something nobody could imagine but when he touches the baby comes back to life and and because he has been tested by bramhastra he is named as parikshith.

another story is that krishna used sudharshana chakram to stop the brahmastra's fury to complete its job and thus saved parikshit by which when parikshith came out he searched for the person who saved him inquiringly and hence called by that name.

another version is that krishna entered the womb of uttara before the brahmastra struck uttara and thus took the hit and saved parikshith

not by accident. he cuts off their heads

well that is debatable, or mostly based on the source. he does cuts the heads of upa pandavas.

Cocanada:

Krishna stops his brahmastra

I am not sure about it. If krishna wanted to stop brahmastra he could have stopped even before it hit any target. but it does hit uthara's womb, and parikshit had to be retrieved from a stillborn fetus(as it was not entirely nine months when this has happend). i guess it depends on the source of the story.

there is a story that says Krishna places his foot on the stillborn baby. there is one more story, which says that Krishna asks anyone who has been a nitya brahmachari all their lives, when touched the still born baby, he would come alive. no one comes forward, and he declares that he who has been accused of having 16000 concubines, will try. and his touch brings the still born baby to life.

Original thread details

"Ashwathaama Balir Vyaso Hanumanash cha Vibhishana Kripacharya cha Parasuramam Saptatah Chirjeevanam" ani antaaru.

Ashwathama, Bali, Vyasa, Hanuma, Vibhishana, KripaCharya, Parasu rama are the seven souls, who are immortals. i.e, their soul will never their physical body, which is against the dwellers of the earth, which is also known as mrituloka.

Coming to Aswathaama -
he is the son of dronacharya in maha bharatha, supposedly a sage with expertise in warfare, and a devout devotee of Lord Shiva. There is a story that he was cursed by Krishna that we will live for ever in the same body, and will experience pains for the sins he committed(killing the infant sons of pandavas),and parikshit still in the womb of uthara.

Have you guys heard various stories on Aswathaama's where abouts.

meeku thelisina stories ikkada post cheyandi.

One story that is particularly heard about is about, aswathama being in Arabian deserts. Other popular stories of apparent eye witnesses are usually around, Asirgarh, and some old siva temples.

Chantodu:

ashwathama is deathless saint kriya yoga mahaveer babji antaru bbabji guda always head cover sesthar as ..ashwatha was hit by head..in bharatha..

the wound on head which is not supposed to be cured ever, was caused by removing the gem that he used to have on his forehead.

Mahavir babji gurinchi akkada akkada references lo chadavatam ee thappa, i dont know much about him. mee dheggara emaina links lantivi unte post cheyandi..

Cocanada:

He only tried to kill Uthara's baby
by using brahmastram

The brahmastram was stopped by Krishna.

I think it was the last day of the war(I am not exactly sure), Aswathama, Kritavarma, Kripacharya the only three survivors of the war from kaurava's camp attack the camp of pandava's during night time. pandava's along with satyaaki, go to the bank of ganga that night, and aswathama kills the five sons of pandava's by accident.

after this incident, arjuna and aswathama get into fierce battle, and both use brahmasthra. Upon the request of sages, both try to with draw their weapons, but aswathama does not succeed in with drawing his weapon. He directs it to uthara's womb, actually diverts it towards pandava women. uthara is carrying Parikshit, and though brahmasthra was not stopped, the burnt fetus was retrieved by Krishna.

due to this act, he was cursed for life.

idhi naaku thelisina story bro.

Mental_sachinodu:

aswathama kills the five sons of pandava's by accident.

not by accident. he cuts off their heads

when Arjuna is chasing Aswathama to kill him, he then uses brahmastra.

Arjuna knows how to withdraw brahmastra. Aswathama doesnt.

Krishna stops his brahmastra

Abhimanyu Wife Uttara, Arjuna's daughter-in-law is a Victim of Brahmastra of Ashwadama ..... :-(
At this time, Uttara was carrying the unborn Parikshit, son of Abhimanyu, who upon birth would be the future heir to all the Pandava brothers. The Brahmastra weapon was successful in fatally burning the foetus, but Krishna revived the stillborn child and cursed Ashwatthama with leprosy and to roam the world for 6,000 years as an unloved castaway. In another version, it is believed that he is cursed to remain alive till the end of the Kali Yuga. It is believed that Ashwatthama migrated to the land currently known as the Arabian Peninsula. Another version goes to say that he is still on Earth in the form of cyclones and typhoons. An old fort near Burhanpur, India called Asirgarh has a Lord Shiva temple on top where it is believed that Ashwatthama offers a red rose everyday to Lord Shiva early in the morning.

This thread is to discuss purely about Ashwatthama and his role in Mahabharata. Interested db'ers can add their points.

Ashwatthama is the son of Dronacharya and Kripi. His name has a connotation to mean 'Horse'. It is because when we was born he started 'neighing' like a horse and hence that name. Ashwattama was also born with a 'mani' on his forehead which made him immune to any diseases and harm from any astras etc.

Ashwatthama was a maharathi, i.e somebody who could be counted amongst the equals of Krishna, Bheeshma, Drona, Karna, Arjuna and had all the divine astras.

Let us add more points here including having discussions on whether he could still be alive according to the curse of Krishna
