Colourful Holi for Governor, wife Special Correspondent Festival of colours celebrated with zest on the spacious lawns of Raj Bhavan â Photo: P.V. Sivakumar One among the people: Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan (left) and wife Vimala Narasimhan (extreme right) playing Holi with Banjara women at Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad on Monday. HYDERABAD: It was a day out for Governor E. S. L. Narasimhan and his wife, Vimala, who celebrated Holi with zest on the spacious lawns of the Raj Bhavan. Covered from head to foot in âgulalâ, Mr. Narasimhan received an assortment of IAS and IPS officers besides a handful of senior journalists and applied herbal colours on them, while Raj Bhavan staff handed out cool drinks and snacks. An orchestra, including a male and female crooner, occasionally belted out film songs. In relaxed mood Although the gaiety among the participants was subdued, perhaps due to awe of the Governor who has earned a reputation of being stern with politicians and officials alike, Mr. Narasimhan himself was relaxed. Dressed in white kurta-pyjama, Mr. Narasimhan patiently gave interviews to numerous television channels but not before applying gulal on the reporters. The families of officers who had come along were given similar treatment by the first lady although use of water colours was a âno noâ. For most, it was a first-time experience of celebrating Holi in the Raj Bhavan as earlier it was a private affair. Some reminisced the rollicking Holi that Marri Channa Reddy celebrated at Greenlands Guesthouse when he was Chief Minister during his first term (1978-80). Asked whether this was an attempt to âdemystifyâ the Raj Bhavan, an area out of bounds without formal invitations, Mr. Narasimhan replied; âIt is not my personal property. It belongs to your State.â Sidestepping loaded questions from reporters, Mr. Narasimhan said his message to the people on the occasion of Holi was to maintain peace. Someone, with the Telangana issue in mind, asked him whether it was politically correct to celebrate when the State was on the boil. He said it was only an indication that normalcy was restored. âAndhra Pradesh is a frontline State and I want people to invest here.â In contrast, Chief Minister K. Rosaiah stepped out briefly from his Ameerpet residence to lock hands with a group of Lambada women whom Health Minister D. Nagender had brought. TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu, sporting colourful headgear, however, danced a few steps with these women at his house in Jubilee Hills, though both leaders shunned colours. |
