[courtesy : reddit] This is my attempt to demystify the IAF attack in Pakistan, there has been a lot of fake news so I have tried to cut out the crap and compile a more believable timeline of how the attack happened. I invite people of both r/India and r/Pakistan to further debate and expand on this compilation. **Time line of Balakot attack according to DG ISPR.** • There was already tense relations between Pakistan and India since Paulwana. • Indian media claims to have attacked three places Balakot, Muzaffrabad and Chikoti. • Since the Paulwana attack the PAF has been following the safeguards of rotational patrolling as is usual. • Combat Air patrolling mission has been on duty since the incident and there are always one or two CAP mission in the air at a given time. • Since 14 FEB both countries’ CAP mission had been going near the borders and precautionary scrambling was common. • At night the first visibility of IAF was observed as they were approaching the Lahore,Sialkot border. • The CAP team on patrol approached them and challenged them but they didn’t cross and remained within 7-8 nautical mile in their border. • According to the SOP as soon as the first team was engaged the second CAP team was deployed in the air promptly. • During the same time another IAF formation was detected in Akara, Bhawalpur, so the second CAP team went and challenged them. • Soon after that a third team from IAF with a “Heavy formation” entered from Muzafrabad sector Kiran Valley and the third CAP team was deployed to challenge them. • By the time the team reached them they were 4-5 nautical miles into Pakistan, when the CAP mission reached them they scrambled and dropped 4 bombs that landed in Jaba near Balakot. • ISPR also invites all international and Indian media to visit the location and see for themselves that not even a single debris can be found , he also invited to look at the satellite images. **After the attack according to International media (Reuters,BBC Urdu)** • Villagers near the town of Balakot in northeast Pakistan were shaken out of their sleep by what seemed like an earthquake in the early hours of Tuesday, only discovering once dawn broke that there had been an Indian airstrike on their neighborhood. • The villagers, however, said only one person was wounded in the attack and they knew of no fatalities. • A resident, who did not want to give his name, said there was a nearby madrasa run by Jaish, though most villagers were guarded talking about their militant neighbors. • “There is this madrasa on the hilltop. The Jaish-e-Mohammed runs it,” he said. • Another person, who also declined to give his name said the militants had had a presence in the area for years. • According to local journalist Zubair khan (BBC urdu) , “The locals heard five loud explosion around 3 to 4 in the morning.” • An anonymous policeman also confirmed that people were calling the police station to inquire about the noise. • The sources at the Balakot police station say that when they went to the location of bombing the security forces were already present and they were returned. • According to the Indian sources the attack was carried at a hilltop in a dense forest. • A twitter account claims that there is a madrasah run by Assad Mazhoor in Jaba and he backs his claim with a picture of a sign board https://imgur.com/a/aZcRbWl . **My Opinion and Speculation** So this is what we know for sure IAF flew 12 aircrafts all the way to Jaba , there is also a madrasah run by Jaesh over there , it is obvious that the target was this madrasah, now the debated is whether they were able to strike it or not, on one hand reputable news agency quoted locals saying that they missed the target by a kilometer, on the other hand there is a guy on twitter claiming that the madrasah has been sealed and they are a lot of ambulance in the area. The only concrete fact that ends this debate is satellite imaging. If the madrasah can be located on google maps then when the maps are updated it can be used to settle the answer once and for all. So here is what I did I tried to guess the location of the madarsah from the Indian media and Pakistani media reports , as the bombing was done in Jaba and as the alleged terrorist base camp was isolated and near the forest I looked at the locations on google earth one by one . If there is a basecamp in the area then I think this would be it , although I concede that it could also be a poultry farm. They did release some footage to networks immediately following the attack. regarding body, the obama administration choose not to release and was duly blasted by Judicial watch for not complying with transparency laws. I think they released the body photos in 2015 | ||

They most likely would. And it does take 24 - 48 hrs for the pics to surface. they have to be cleared by defense ministry. IF we dont see anything by end of the week, that may seep some doubts on the extent of damage. | ||

IAF did not cross LOC since 1971.....today they crossed LOC & POK and dropped bombs. They will not take such risk without solid intel. If all they wanted was show off, they could just cross 2-3km and dropped the bombs. No need to go so far. | ||

We tried that during 1971-2016 and it did not achieve results. Silence is considered as weakness. If you know the geography, you will understand it is impossible to contain all attacks. Which country is successful in stopping this guerilla fights. Take us in Vietnam, Soviet in Afghanistan. Many pakis still believe India is inferior and don’t have stomach to go for war or face death. Peace is attained by show of strength. Unless pak changes, Kashmir won’t change. Peace is attained only when parties are tired of fighting. This is not me but pvnr who said about the northeast militants. For Kashmir to get tired of it, funding has to stop from pak. | ||

We don’t know details and probably will never know. Pakistan does not allow foreigners or non military outsiders to go there so any information is skewed. Forget 350...even if 10 terrorists are killed, it is a super human feat ! If this was just a sortie to drop a few bombs and that too 10 mins away from the nearest Pak base (10 mins is the reaction time), then what was the purpose to cross into the enemy airspace, drop a few bombs and come back after 90 seconds ! | ||

Reuters has reported that one person is injured or dead (death cannot be confirmed yet) The villagers of Balakot are thinking that IAF planes targeted a Madrassa nearby and missed thier target :-) Four explosions were heard around 3 AM and when the villagers woke up in the morning, there were a few uprooted trees and large craters outside thier village.
