a) Buy and hold for long term - fundamentally good stocks - HDFC, L&T, ICICI, ITC, Glaxo, M&M, TCS etc etc. Just buy and forget for a decade b) Don't go near near govt. companies c) Equity investments are as good if not better than RE appreciation from apartments, i had pointed this out n number of times in this DB. Someone indicated that Acropolis apts. have appreciated 7-8 times since 2000. Well over the last 10 years, even the stock market has risen 6-7 times. And nothing to beat the liquidity of the public markets. d) That being said, i don't buy the argument that equities can be 100% of your portfolio - at best keep 30-40% there, have another 20-30% in bonds, some in RE and balance in gold. e) At the current moment, there is too much credit driven equities boom across the world from - earlier it was the Bernanke put then it became Draghi "whatever it takes to support the Euro" and now it it Shinzo Abe's monetary expansion in Japan. Across the world, GDP figures have been terrible, equities in the US are at a cyclically adjusted PE of 23, one of the highest ever.. i would advice being in cash right now (and a lot of it). If you are really itching to invest, buy some debt funds but sit on cash. Over the next year i see some big corrections and opportunities to invest... | ||

Not using credit cards is quite regressive, if one can't have the discipline - not having a credit card, is not the solution. FIIs are one set of drivers and yes retail investors have stayed away - but once the pension funds and PF corpus is slowly introduced into the market and corporate governance slowly gets implemented (things have definitely got better in the last 60 years), we can see the growth going forward. | ||

You have good self-control :-) But even otherwise - it is good to see property as an investment - as it makes sense to sell an old house and buy a new house as it reduces the outgoing liability on the new house. Ofcourse it is debatable since the old property might fetch rental income.
if you carefully compare over the last 15-20 years, the returns fetched by good balanced funds is almost the same as RE and much better than Gold - and the difference in returns between RE and Mutual funds (Bond / Liquid / Equity) will only reduce and be - plus the stability and liquidity of MFs is hard to beat | ||

If you have guts to put 90-95% investments in equity..you should be having age on ur side, your family structure.. many things needs to be in your favour.. Also if you are always able to choose multibaggers means...you should be spending 60-70% of time in researching and shuffling your portfolio..which is higly impossible with 9 to 5 job in IT or other sector at the same time indian life style is not measured by stocks we own unfortunately..its different ball game there..RE, big houses..gold..will rule there | ||

I think stocks too are going through an unnatural high for no specific reason..too much liquidity driven by the Bernanke/ Draghi and Abe puts. Akkada all business fundamentals are extremely bad, no reason in hell for the market to go up so much. Take today's GDP numbers for instance....10 yearly low...akkada market close to all time high. | ||
