What to what and what no to do in Sao Paulo I had 36 hours to kill in Sao Paolo. So what to do and what not to in Sampa and other random stuff: ⢠Safety â my biggest surprise. There is so much crap that is out there in the press about how unsafe Brazil is. I saw more women out on the streets at bus stops, metros, restaurants, roads etc at 11 pm at night than I see at 7 pm in Delhi. Downtown Sao Paulo is safer than most big cities downtown. Donât let all that bad press dissuade you. After all, we are not going into a favela to study the underprivileged. ⢠Portugese â be prepared for language struggles. Many hotels waiters could not even understand âwaterâ, it was that bad. ⢠Great public transport â though convoluted with nearly 10 different metro lines. ⢠Museum hopping â I visited 4 museums, 3 of which were free. They have a very good collection of art, both local artists and international giants like Picasso, Matisse, Monet, Manet, Van Gogh. All of them are wonderfully curated, exhibited, though 2 of the museums did not have an Engish translation near the exhibits. It is a pity that in India there is not even one worthy museum, leave aside 4 in one small area of Brazil. The NGMA in Delhi is a joke in comparison. ⢠Energy â Sampa has a great throb to it. Lots of young crowd, skateboarding, dancing on the streets, thronging museums, graffiti painting, art fairs. I sometimes wonder what the young in India do nowadays â probably go to a film or mall or watch IPL⦠The night I was leaving there was a 24 hour art event by the Sampa Ministry of Culture at rail stations, museums, malls, etc â DJs at one place, stand up comics at another, food stall elsewhere, lovely ⦠⢠Churrascaria â I had this in US before, but nothing to beat the original ⢠Caipirinha â for non-drinkers like me, this should carry a health warning. 43% alcohol, seriously. They might have as well called it Sulphuric Acid. ⢠Brazilian women â are they pretty or are they pretty. As Brazil has been a melting pot with vast intermingling down the ages, they have got the best of the Meditteranean, African and the West. And there were a lot of women too, they outnumbered the men by 3:1 at every public place. I guess all the men were busy drinking caipirinha and watching football. ⢠Weather â awesome. Apparently does not cross 32-33 even in peak summer and winters are mild. Of all the countries I have been to, I must say the worst I have been is the US. One is just so handicapped without a car and being Indians I canât drive there. It is so refreshing to visit these public transport enabled countries. |
