NTRMarch 29, 1963 was a red-letter day in the history of Telugu cinema. The biggest hit Telugu film industry has ever seen, Lavakusha was released on that day.

Just as Rome was not built in a day, this movie took its time to reach the silver screen. The shooting started on 5 March, 1958 while the release date was 29 March 1963! Lalitha Sivajyothi Films released this movie produced by A. Shankara Reddy and directed by C. Pullaih & CS Rao. It starred the legendary NTR and Anjali Devi along with Nagaiah, Kantha Rao, Master Nagaraju and Master Subramanyam. The music was provided by singer/composer Ghantasala. The movie was distributed by Chamriya Talkie Distributors throughout AP.

Lavakusha was the only movie in the history of Telugu cinema to be shot in GEVA color. The director of photography was PL Roy.

Reasons For Stating Lavakusha To Be The Biggest Hit Ever Made In The History Of Telugu Cinema:

Telugu film industry had witnessed many sensational hits, many records. But overall if we see the longevity of those records, Lavakusha is unmatchable.

It was released in 26 centers and went on to have a 100 day run at all the centers. It took more than a decade to beat this record, and this was a first. It had a direct Silver Jubilee in 13 centers. In Gudiwada, (Sharath 140 and Srinivasa 35), there was a shift Silver Jubilee. Prior to Lavakusha, no other film had jubilee run in 4 centers.

In one year time, Lavakusha was seen by 1,97,95,529 which set the record then. In one year, Lavakusha was exhibited 100 days in as many as 50 centers (with regular shows) which was an unbeatable record for more than three decades. It’s repeat run value was one of the strongest.

Lavakusha had 469-day uninterrupted run in Hyderabad with regular shows, in very few theaters (Basant–203 + Regal–56 + Rahat–56 + others) which was still a record. Premabhishekam's 533 days was highest but with too many shifts.

Lavakusha is the first Telugu movie in its first run which collected one crore and this was a record for a long time. Prior to Lavakusha, no film collected even one-third of this amount which shows the real potential of this movie.

Surprisingly, even today, this movie holds the highest run in many centers. To quote an example, the 252-day run in Rajarajeshwari Talkies in Warangal is still unsurpassable even after 43 years. Even after this majestic run, the film was shifted to GR Talkies (in Hanumakonda) and it ran for almost 50 days, making it a total of 300 days in Warangal alone.

In many centers like Anakapalli, Lavakusha is the first direct 100 days film and it took more than a decade for any other film to strike a century in those parts. In centers like Amalapuram, Lavakusha is the first direct 175 days film and it took more than a decade for any other film to have jubilee run in those centers. It collected 25 lakhs share in 14 weeks (for 100 days). Lavakusha is the first film to run 80 days in 80 centers, including late release and shifts.

Pakka thread lo reply icchamu swami. malli modatiki vastaar. LK had the highest repeat runs in history of TFI. It was also a big hit in other langs compared to MB.

It had 4 repeat runs and ran 100 days all 4 times. This itself is a record.

Mayabazaar story as we all know is magical reimagination of a Mahabharat episode, which was not a fact. Hence its appeal was only limited to Tamil.

Lavakusa was a pure translation of Ramayana episode and hence it had a Pan India appeal. It did great wen dubbed in other languages too.

Pedda vallani yevarni adigina cheptaar saami, how big a hit Lavakusa was compared to any other movie ani. Ika mee ishtam. GN

Regardless of these statistics we cannot attribute the collections to actors..

I would see it as stamina of telugu cinema audience.. not any hero

inflation adjust chesukunna .. Charan movies are grossing mor ethan Chiru movies ante adhi charan greatness kaadhu.. maaruthunnaa mana telugu audience stamina..
So we cannot compare one era to other..

the calculation is about impact of cinema on corresponding times

Latest calcualtions are that in AP , there are 50% christ followers and Mohammed followers.. and they are not intrested in watching it..during 1960's it might be less than 20%.. now re-calculate..

There are a lot of other dynamics like Population, avg cost of tickets, No. of centres, Urban vs Rural centres, etc. So, we can never take a straight forward inflation rate as rupee value is very dynamic.

The perfect way to calculate would be Overall Population at that time to the gross no. of tickets sold. It is said that atleast 2 Crs of tickets were sold in the first year when the population of AP was around 3.6 Crs.

So, the % of population who watched the movie in theatre in the first year was around 50 - 60% in AP itself. Now just try to beat this statistic. No other Telugu movie can even come close. We have not even considered the repeat runs and the other language runs.

mari deniki population increase ni include chesi elagina 1000 crores touch cheyyalani trying? u can't expect the new population to watch the movie. so limit ur calculation to only inflation and ticket prices.

50yrs back maa tata 500Rs/Acre konnadu, ippudu adi 25Laks/Acre

aa lekkana 1Cr ki 20000Acres vachevi

20000Acres X 25Laks = 50,00,00,00,000 ~ 5000Crs

anduke only movie ticket inflation consider chesindi........money inflation teesukonte first release ke 1000crs daatutundi......real estate inflation depends on area

o.k let's not consider money inflation........let's just consider highest ticket value ratios......at that time RS1 is the highest ticket rate......now highest ticket range is between 50 - 200 in india and RS 500 in overseas....atleast 15% present cinema revenue is coming from overseas and satellite rights ..and revenue from multiplxes could be around 15%

so average highest ticket rate now = 50*(.7)+500*(.15)+ 200*(.15) = RS140

so just going by movie ticket inflation 1cr revenue in 1963 is same as 140crs now

Now consider population infaltion......now we are three times in population compared to 1963

so multiply 140crs three time ......140*3 = 320crs

This calculation just based on cinema ticket and population inflation

if you consider pure money value it easily corsses 1000crs for first relase

If you include all revenue from all languages and multiple relases, then calcualtion just on ticket inflation would easily cross 600-700crs
