Let me clarify. - You apply for extension online (form I-90, pay 485) - you get receipt notice in about week to 10 days. - using that receipt number, schedule for a local INS appointment (anywhere from same day to 1 week). - Show them the receipt number and they will put extension for 6 months. | ||

u should get it by that time. as far as renewal, you dont have to unless u want to travel. In case if u want to travel for emergency, you can apply locally at INS and they will put an extension sticker back of your GC for additional 6 months. Just did it. | ||

last name change is very easy. In my wife case, she just went to SSN office and changed it, then changed DL. But she was US citizen, she still has us passport with old name, when its time for renewal, she will change it in the passport. but, in your case change the name first on SSN and DL first then apply for citizenship with changed name.
