Telugodu bro, I had a female manager for a while. The best manager in many aspects. She gave us freedom to do what we want and she backed us up when there was trouble, she cared. That was the bottomeline. She was liek the motherhen in many aspects. Even if her methods were not traditional, what she taught me was courage of conviction. You believe in something you stand up for it, you believe in your team and you cover for them.

pedda avida in her late 40s or early 50s. But very well deserved to be where she is enni responsibilities vunna she's always on top of things that matter. Edicts I live by :-)

Don't bother pleasing people - you can never make everyone happy all the time.

Do the right thing - for your team and for the larger organization:-)

Put the right people in charge and then trust their judgement.Don't interfere in every minute detail:-)

Listen to what your team's telling you.Valueing their opinion is more important than buying them drinks or food :-)

Assume good intentions on part of the people around you - nobody is working against you they are all trying to succeed - enable them to be successful by removing their obstacles- don't become one :-)

Help your team grow - let them get the spotlight every once in while instead of doing all the presentations/communication yourself-it may take a little of your glory away but it gives them the visibility with upper management and helps their careers. Caution though - it may be perceived as palming off your work - so it is critical to understand who is mature enough to understand why you are doing it :-)

I have seen a few women managers... and I found only one among them really efficient and effective; like any good manager she used to take inputs from all the team members etc. Others were like.. they just liked to be called managers.. they are completely dependent on the Technical Leads for the inputs. Lead edi chebithe adey vaallaki vedam annattu.. That is how much they trust them. May be because they lack the technical skills etc. They dont even want to ask for the inputs of other team members.

So far, I have worked with only one woman manager, she was not my manager but manager of a team we were coordinating with and I was working with her to implement their application requirements. She was a efficient and good manager to work with. Other than that, no other experiences.

madammm, you are genetically not coded to be a good manager. unfortunately. but what can help you is this - dont get too lenient with your team, get to know them personally but dont be an agony aunt, appreciate their work in front of others but chide them when they screw up in a one-one meeting. keep adding value to their work every day, if they are going to use some new technology learn that and let them know you know better. the day you lose their respect is your end. oka 6 months tharvatha kanpinchu, apudu notes exchange cheskundham. good luck to your team. kidding. :D

Well, you find this kind of people in every team with the "It works on my machine" syndrome. Anyway, the reason I asked you the question about the style is I was curious to find why majority of the indian managers act the same. They dont like to participate rather they prefer to dictate.

just take it in stride, if you have a prob with your manager, and you cant speak up for yourself, you are to be blamed as much as your manager.

I don't know if I have a *style* today bro. I delegate and follow-up well enough. I am pretty good with documenting everything and training others. But I have no patience for for *slow* performers. I noticed that I can work/deliver 2 to 3x faster than someone in the team. I just need to learn to give that person lots of time to come up to speed. what one needs to get is people have their strengths and weaknesses
get the best in them and cover the weakness as much as you can

I have had passive aggressive male managers and very aggressive yet giving you a free hand for the most part female managers. And I also had very intimidating "I am the boss and u r the underling type bosses". I hate hate hate the 3rd kind and I don't want to be one of those under any circumstances.

I tend to be very aggressive and fearless when it comes to speaking up. Smooth talking nerchukovali ee year ani artham ayyindi.

@HD - I don't cook/bake/grill/roast. But I take people to lunches a lot (on my dime). I think that should do :-)

Three types of woman bosses I have observed

Num1) Hailing from a working class BG , bright in school went to nice nice school to study business and start their career....
They micromanage like hell...its like how they deal with milk vendors or a grocery vendor...they dont trust that easily anything....and in corporate world which is dominated by men a women like this will enter like she is up for a war...no matter how nice people r with her she thinks she has to be hard to surivive...she turns into a fighter fish...like someone who had 6 redbulls for breakfast...she fights n argues n debates n wat not...

Num2) Someone who comes from a well established family....they seen it all n they understand the whole thing....they perfectly follow the protocol...they talk only to people they r supposed to talk to...they wont micro manage...they perfectly evaluate the situation n dont panic

Num3) Menopausal

Never use too much tech jargon..in a conversation....do so in an email...

one on one...their ego gets so quickly flared up when they come across words they struggle to understand...

in general women always go by this:

If you are complete nut case and make stupid jokes: U are smart yet funny
If you talk less and let her BS flow unhindered: U are smart and down to earth
If you speak too tersely but are not a quite ind: U are an Ok guy
If you are smarter than her: Then god help you

Women in general seek logic only when they want to assert some BS...the more you press them for logic the more illogical they become...and start throwing phrases..like "That is the way it is"...."Be practical (i.e logical I assume)"
which are apparently incompatible terms.....

Women(not all) seek attention...all the time...there is this need to be called good by the higher up however a dumbF he is....

Largely insular to new ideas...their standard manthra is "What works now is the one which should stay"...

scared of creativity and artistic approaches to problem solving...always an attitude to play to the seniors...

Always offended at suggestions...esp w.r.t to project methodologies...They need this feeling always that they are right

nee bondha! Whether one acknowledges or not, there is a difference in the way men and women think and operate. I have seen that a lot and I have also seen how some male managers tend to differentiate and point out faults in women more than men. I am sure women managers do that too, only I didn't run into one, yet. Women tend to be more analytical and at the same time more emotional too.

As for pandering to upper management the higher you go in the management the higher the pressure and less wiggle room. I find management a pain sometimes - you are stuck between ur boss and ur underling. Both are upset at you.

In any case, the intention of this thread is to know about others experiences and learn from them.

I find that most women managers are a pain to work with...the most observable trait is that they always work to please their higher ups...not for the team..that means unreasonable deadlines and bloated project expectations

If something goes wrong they are first to drop the blame onto some one else...especially subordinates...They have issues when some one in the team are much more smarter than them...

I have only worked for 4 months in a team lead by a white woman and that was as bad an experience that I ever had professionally....ever since I am wary of women managers...

I know personally how she chose to work only with Chinese females with less than normal (per GS) communication skills...and are largely submissive..
