Verdict: HIT (3.50/5.00)

My expectations:

Movies from Sri Hari are always targeted at 'Mass' audience and are pretty much action-based. His recent track record has not been impressive with a series of flops, with the story of the movie having to be blamed to a great extent. I was skeptical about the final outcome of the movie, the moment I saw the stills of the movie.

My view:

The movie starts on a bad note, with the director lifting every scene from the Malayalam flick, confused taking shots and also hero trying to inflict his knowledge on philosophy onto the viewers (which is by the way found most common in Shaji Kailash's movies, director of the original film).

Soon the director gets into mould and story writer Sajan completely dominates the proceedings. Sri Mahalaksmi (Shamna) joins a Medical College to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a doctor. She is ragged by a 9-girls-group who call themselves 'Mirchi girls'. Circumstances unknown, she gets murdered. The prime suspects being the Mirchi girls, Sri Hari comes to their rescue and takes up the case in the court of law. What happens later is to be watched on the screen as it is quite an interesting fare.

Except the intial lapse of 15 mins, never will you be bored in the movie. Story writer Sajan takes all the credit for making hero part of the story without much hoopla and a big flashback. Ragging scenes are canned very well and are very heart touching. The film keeps up the pace with some very good court scenes and a fantastic background score.

Artists and Technicians:

One thing this film proves, again, is that script is way more important than director, production values and artists. Sajan really deserves a pat for his bold effort and succeeding well at it. Any other story writer could have made it into a suspense thriller. The very fact that Sajan, also the screenplay writer, chose not to deal it so and make it just a story about a girl-next-door and the plight, in general, of girls in college, impressed me a lot.

Vijayan played safe by copying the shot making of Shaji Kailash except for the ragging scenes and court scenes. Gowtham Raju's editing was painful for the eyes. He unnecessarily, for reasons best known to him, used 10 cuts in a single scene, causing great visual aberration. You even wonder if it was Vijay C. Kumar, the cinematographer who worked for this film. He also needs to take the blame for some bizarre output on screen. Had it been taken care of, the film would have made a much better impact on the audience.

One technician who needs a special mention is Mani Sharma, one would tend to do a second-rate job for a small film like this, but Mani Sharma, undoubtedly the no. 01 music director he is in Telugu Film Industry, has done an excellent job. With the script and story so impressive and perfect, he made sure not to let it down in any way and has given outstanding background score. But he has safely used one of his earlier tunes as the main theme of the movie. Mani Sharma has done his part and played an important role in the film's success.

Srihari's (as usual), Tilakan's performance are highlights of the movie. Shamna did a commendable job.

Box Office Prediction:

Unlike other Sri Hari movies, this is targeted at audiences of all centers alike. The makers made sure it has everything for all A, B, and C centers. The movie also has some well choreographed fights to pacify Sri Hari's fans and also the audience of B and C centers. I am sure it will taste a similar success in A centers too and be a profitable venture on the whole for the makers.

Verdict as a reviewer:

Through out the movie, one question that was nagging me was how come a so-called-small movie, could actually be so convincing in the story department and yet keep the audience engrossed. The makers made sure the presence of Sri Hari not to influence them and make them incorporate songs into the movie. The tight screenplay makes you forget the small mistakes committed a very few times by Vijayan, editor and cinematographer. Though it is a Malayalam remake, it's surely to stand out among Sri Hari's films. I hope that every film goer, will embrace the movie, which is surely a different film among the routine run-of-the-mill movies hitting the marquee these days.
