This is a 2.5" drive, so you can NOT put 3.5" HDD in it. You need something like: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232 002 It comes handy to convert any 2.5"/3.5"/optical drive into hot-swappable USB drive. | ||

so u now have a laptop/desktop that doesn't work and then you are going to tinker with ur external hard drive to test the hard drive in ur PC? If you have never played with hard drives, make sure you have a backup of the external hard drive first :-) | ||

excuse my ignorance, i have this @ home with 500GB external hard drive, and a laptop http://www.digitalsaonline.co.za/catalog/images/EE-V200SSUK. jpg can i remove my hard drive from my desktop and connect it to the above mentioned using my laptop and see whether i have all the data or not before i can go ahead and repair/re-install. I would take the hard disk out and pop into another machine to see if it is dead. If I can read the drive, I would back up and proceed with repair/reinstall. If you don't have another Desktop, get a Hard Drive enclosure, drop this HDD into it, connect to a laptop and backup. | ||

Knoppix is just bootable linux on a cd/flash drive It doesn't matter what you have running on your PC, you should be able to boot your PC with knoppix on a bootable CD. Once you are in the linux OS, you just find your existing C and D drives and copy the data over. You will probably see them as /dev/hda, /dev/hdb etc. Attach a USB drive which you will probably see as yet another /dev/hd device. So you would do cp /dev/hdb/dir /dev/hdd or something like that. Google knoppix. There is a lot of help on the net. It's pretty popular. RGD, I typically don't go for repair option if I don't have a backup of my data. But then I don't trust anything windows to work well. You know better than me for sure. | ||

If you don't have a backup, boot from knoppix CD first and get a copy of all the data you want. You can google knoppix to find a downloadable copy. After that you can troubleshoot the hard disk. You can take out the disk let it cool down and freeze it (in an anti static bag) for a day or two and then stick it back in. If all that doesn't work, try the repair option rather than reinstall. | ||
