thanks bro, will check it out.
Guttonkay:make sure you have a backup of the external hard drive first :-)
emi chestham cheppandi, i have been using my PC from past 6 years, never had any issue until now, this is the first time i am having issues with it...
Simba:This is a 2.5" drive, so you can NOT put 3.5" HDD in it. You need something like: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232 002 It comes handy to convert any 2.5"/3.5"/optical drive into hot-swappable USB drive.

so u now have a laptop/desktop that doesn't work and then you are going to tinker with ur external hard drive to test the hard drive in ur PC? If you have never played with hard drives, make sure you have a backup of the external hard drive first :-) |

yes this is the best to see if your data is there...once you find the data you can xfer it to laptop (atleast imp files) and then wipe out or repair ...but as far I know repair will not wipe out u r HD... prati anubhuti oka nirdishtamaina naadam untundi, sruthi untundi, swaram untundi-Cocana(n)da swami |

yes, just pick one site closest to you like wisc.edu This link has a detailed write up on all the steps involved. But if the repair option works you are all set. Good luck. http://lifehacker.com/192982/geek-to-live--rescue-files-with -a-boot-cd All else fails ask the PC guy in your office for help. He can get ur data out. Our PC guy told me about knoppix. That's what he used to get my data out and I have been using it since. |

Nanigadu:
Knoppix is just bootable linux on a cd/flash drive It doesn't matter what you have running on your PC, you should be able to boot your PC with knoppix on a bootable CD. Once you are in the linux OS, you just find your existing C and D drives and copy the data over. You will probably see them as /dev/hda, /dev/hdb etc. Attach a USB drive which you will probably see as yet another /dev/hd device. So you would do cp /dev/hdb/dir /dev/hdd or something like that. Google knoppix. There is a lot of help on the net. It's pretty popular. RGD, I typically don't go for repair option if I don't have a backup of my data. But then I don't trust anything windows to work well. You know better than me for sure. |

Guttonkay:f you don't have a backup, boot from knoppix CD first and get a copy of all the data you want. You can google knoppix to find a downloadable copy. After that you can troubleshoot the hard disk. You can take out the disk let it cool down and freeze it (in an anti static bag) for a day or two and then stick it back in. If all that doesn't work, try the repair option rather than reinstall.
yeah any linux can do that I would advise that but you know its hard first let him do xp ways...thats what i thought.....that is the reason I love Linux YOU MAY WORK BIT Hard FIRST (UBUNTU aithe adhi kuda avasaram ledhu) later peace of mind....but windows always nightmare.... prati anubhuti oka nirdishtamaina naadam untundi, sruthi untundi, swaram untundi-Cocana(n)da swami |
