I used follow tennis without knowing how the game is played ... from the age of 16 .. just for GK purpose who won so & so tourney in XXX year kinda stuff . I used to represent school/college in general/sports quiz competitions.. but actually started watching tennis from 1987- just about the time chris evert retired navratilova about to retire .. steffi, arancha sanches, sabatini were blossoming in women circuit .. Edberg /Becker were in prime form mats wilander is another name I can think of .. KB: justine had a bad day at office and got bounced about by sammy stosur in the 4th round. EK.... exactly 4months short of XXX. started watching tennis at 9. but i only remember matches starting from about 91..... 2yrs after i started watching tennis. 1st 2yrs, becker and graf ante total GOD and GODDESS! i knew zilch about tennis. but becker was like a rock-star. god! i used to imitate his serve.... that stiff knee and all....  i am sure i watched nothing but wimbledon and french open in those 1st 2yrs, but just those few sightings of the tennis stars would last for a year Sterility is hereditary. becker, edberg and seles and graf are the ones that got me hooked on tennis i just loved the way she competed. i cried real badddd, when she was stabbed. she was just tremendous for the game..... i think she is the pioneer of the power baseline tennis in women's tennis (and ofcourse the shrieking  i found it cute when she did the shrieking, but now it is a maaaaaaajor pain in the ear.....). the way seles played it was like she had two backhands. till then backhand on women's tennis = slice. seles and to a little extent, capriati, showed that backhand could be a major weapon and all the power hitting that williams sisters, russian sisters, belgian sisters and serbian sisters do these days has a direct connection to ms. seles' unique game in the early 90s. starting from 90 aus open to 93 aus open..... out of those 9slams, seles played 8 and won 7 and lost in the final of the 1992 wimbledon final because she was not allowed to shriek graf won that match 6-1 6-2. this after 1992 french open classic, which is perhaps the best woman's match of all time. (maybe 2003 usopen capriati-henin comes real close) anyway, seles-graf was like nadal-federer. graf was sheer elegance and grace. seles was power and force. that power was giving graf all sorts of trouble and then the stabbing happened. graf went on a major tear after that and ended up with 22GS. if seles hadn't been stabbed, tennis history would have been different..... oh well..... What about monica seles? I wasnt that matured in analysing the game of tennis when she was playing at her best, but i used to adore her a lot.. My all time great, till date is seles then comes henin.. In this db, there's always someone watching you!!  | ||

What a sweet gift from Francesca to the Azzurri. Stosur had all the weapons to light up Phillippe Chatrier, but Francesca did her homework like a diligent kid and executed the plans to the T. and the way she dismantled stosur's kick-serve and spinny forehand which gave serena and henin the yips, was SWEEEEEEEEEET! loved the match. as exciting as a straight-set women's final could ever get. I wanted Stosur to win and so did all the tennis-fans in the world except francesca's relatives and friends! ( heck! maybe just her mom and dad! atleast that's how it felt till Francesca started weaving her magic yesterday afternoon in Paris.) over the 2sets, she converted me into her fan - sweeter tennis than that, i have not seen on women's tennis since ms. magic - martin hingis retired, after getting battered mercilessly by the power hitters! though i must say, it is unfair to say henin's game is anything but sweet. It is just that henin is cut from a different cloth compared to hingis and fran-chess- ca! she can pack up some serious power - especially on the backhandside. but hingis and francesca just slice and dice. so that's the operative word for Francesca's win - S W E E T! just like her game and very very much like her name. Italian football got a kick start.. Great game by schiavon.. except three games in second set, stosur was no match at all.. she just had no fighting spirit... absolutely no attittude towards the game.. totally disappointed.. In this db, there's always someone watching you!! | ||
