we never know..... On Friday,Met a guy at Berkeley's classics reading ( showing Victorian poetry in a 5 week long series) who happens to be a professor at Penn State. Unaware of his stature, I ignorantly asked him his specialty and he named "Number theory" and in specific mock theta functions of Ramanujan. I was with a sense of awe asking him about the declining standard of pure sciences in India...He said.."India is a blessed country. I can till date, not understand how such a corrupt country produce such brilliant thinkers and then said that..." its almost as though it is a gift to your nation...mysteriously... Couple of months ago, I met this shy young guy with a thick accent at a number theory conference...His name is raghava. Very shy and plaintive. He is grad student of Number theory. His paper on Mock theta functions was the thunderbolt from no where...this kid hardly 21 has solved a 85 year old problem...and extended ramanujam's work....To get a measure of his achievement , brendt who is a super star in Number theory said that..." I can see another srinivasa.. touch wood...this kid is a wunderkind. I pleaded him to send me his full name. He obliged and sent me an email today.. This is a story of extreme poverty to the pantheon of super stars. He has been accepted now at the vaunted MIT number theory circle and also at princeton to study mathematics.... |
