strange are the ways . what about people who are US citizens and are applying for OCI or POI cards? their indian passports are already returned right how do they get that 'certificate'?. what would they do if the dual citizenship bill passes in future? issue new passports again? You said it was cancelled but do you still have to surrender link Simba is askign -- no...mine was submitted by me at the time of OCI as a proof....and they cancelled and stamped it cancelled and gave me back my cancelled passport.... My cousin works for Indian consulate london so she said i dont need to. problem she told was that.....loads of UK NRI's are still using the Indian passports instead of taking a visa or a OCI or a PIO... so effectively they using both passports......Indian for India visits....British for other visits... British govt has no problem with this.....but Indian Govt is strict....it is by law that you have to surrender it.....when you take the other Passport.... unfortuntely.....its not covered at the other end.....If there was rule that you have to surrender indian and then only obtain british.....then everyone would have done it.....but now onus is us to surrender it and i totally agree with it as well......but OCI ki apply chesinappudu.....vallu cancel chesi isthey.....asalu ye godava undedhi kadhu..... Also Passport validity unteney problem......anukunta.....I can get this info.... I received an email from Indian consulate last week about this. I pasting the content here: ============================================================ ================= Dear Applicant, Please refer to your application(s) for the OCI status which has been received in the Consulate recently. As you are aware, Consulate General of India, New York, receives a very large number of applications for OCI status. In order to deal with the heavy rush of applications in the past few months, we had constituted a task force and put in extra efforts to clear the applications. In fact, all OCI applications, which were received in the Consulate till April 30, 2010 and found to be complete, have been processed. Meanwhile, the Consulate has received instructions from the Government of India that applicants for all services, including OCI/PIO applications (including those whose applications are under process or whose OCI documents have not yet been delivered) are required to submit a Surrender Certificate for cancellation of the Indian passport and renunciation of the Indian citizenship. Details are posted on our website: www.indiacgny.org. Kindly note that submission of Surrender Certificate is a mandatory requirement and the OCI/PIO applications can not be processed nor can OCI documents be issued without the aforementioned certificate. This is not applicable to the foreign-born children who never held Indian passports. However, their parents held the Indian citizenship in the past and they are advised to obtain the Surrender Certificate for future reference. Kindly furnish the Surrender Certificate urgently so that further action on your OCI application/OCI documents can be taken by the Consulate. We regret the inconvenience caused. BULLSHIDDDD mama, I KNOWMANY damn-desi-indians who after getting OCI have been using PASSPORT(indian) for local India transactions/bank dealings etc... GOVT want to curb that. GOVT want to do entire paperwork and send it to centralised databases, saying that THESE PASSPORTS are SURRENDERED and HENCE dont qualify any merit for it. I see a new law in indian consulate website that in addition to the normal OCI fees, there is an additional $175 fee to just surrender the indian passport. This new law/notice was posted on May 2010. We took OCI last year and they did not cancel or take away my indian passport. TO all OCI firends, do you know if we have go to consulate and surrender the passport now? Does this new law apply retroactively to OCI holders prior to May 2010? TIA |
