Hyderabad, May 14: The terror outfit, Tehreek Galbha-e-Islam (TGI), struck again in the city on Friday evening by shooting dead an unarmed police constable near Voulga Hotel in the Shalibanda area of old city.
The constable, Mr U. Ramesh 27, ran for cover but was shot three times, allegedly by the absconding TGI terror operative Viqar Ahmed and two of his associates who came in a bike.
Eyewitnesses said that the constable tried to save himself by running behind an autorickshaw pleading to be taken to hospital. But he collapsed in the middle of the road and died instantly.
The attackers left a video CD tagged �TGI� at the scene of the offence. Computer forensic experts who examined the CD found a letter in it in which they demanded the government to arrest those responsible for police firing in 2007 after the Macca Masjid blast.
�This is the first time that a terror organisation has left a CD at the spot,� said a police officer. �This is similar to the modus operandi adopted by international terror outfits.�
Mr Ramesh was attached to the 11th battalion of AP Special Police of Kadapa. He was posted along with four other constables at Shahalibanda picket to maintain law and order during Friday prayers.
Eyewitnesses, including a pan shop owner, identified the assailants as Viqar Ahmed and Mohammed Suleman. Police suspect that the third person was an absconding ISI operative Najiullah alias Najji, the grandson of DJS chief Shaik Mahboob Ali. Another possible suspect is Omar Ali.
A massive manhunt has been launched to catch the assailants, who shot dead a police constable, in the old city.
�The constable was sitting under the tree opposite the hotel,� said an investigating official. �The assailants came on motorcycle and asked him his name. Then then fired at him thrice and fled. Another constable, Mr G. Shanta Rao, rushed Ramesh to the Osmania Hospital but he was declared dead on arrival.�
Ramesh is survived by his wife, who is also a police constable, and two children.
�Around 4.15 pm, I heard the sound of shots and I saw a constable running behind an auto,� said Mr S.M. Maqdoom Hussain Soofi, owner of Classic Motors, a car rental shop in front of the spot where Ramesh collapsed. �I thought he was chasing the auto, but he collapsed after running about a 100 meters.�
When Mr Soofi and others tried to help up the constable, they found blood oozing from his chest. �We immediately called 108 ambulance which arrived in 15 minutes and he was shifted to the hospital,� he said.
Mr J. Santosh, a hair dresser, said he saw a bike carrying three persons speeding ahead of the auto.
Police found a 7.95 calibre revolver bullets at the scene of the offence. Investigators said the same type of gun was used during the previous firing incidents involving Viqar Ahmed.
In a previous shooting incident on December 3, 2008, a head constable of Counter Intelligence survived a bullet injury in his stomach at IS Sadan in Santoshnagar. On May 18, 2009, a home guard was killed and a constable was injured at Falaknuma police picket.
Meanwhile, the Union home ministry is keeping a close watch on the security situation in Hyderabad.
