Reading a book called "survival of the Sickest" by Dr.Sharon Moalem.. Very interesting - gives some intriguing theories about how the inherited diseases of today were actually developed in humans as defence mechanisms in the past..and Natural selection ensured the survival of the "sickest" gene pools... There's a bit of Neanderthal in all of us AP, May 8, 2010, 12.19am IST WASHINGTON: We have met Neanderthal and he is us — at least a little. The most detailed look yet at the Neanderthal genome helps answer one of the most debated questions in anthropology: Did Neanderthals and modern humans mate? The answer is yes, there is at least some cave man biology in most of us. Between 1% and 4% of genes in people from Europe and Asia trace back to Neanderthals. "They live on, a little bit," says Svante Paabo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. Researchers led by Paabo, Richard Green of the University of California, Santa Cruz, and David Reich of Harvard Medical School compared the genetic material collected from the bones of three Neanderthals with that from five modern humans. Their findings, reported in Friday's edition of the journal Science, show a relationship between Neanderthals and modern people outside Africa, Paabo said. That suggests that interbreeding occurred in the Middle East, where both modern humans and Neanderthals lived thousands of years ago, he said. "People are interested in the question: 'By what route did I get here?' And the idea that there is a faint echo of Neanderthals" is interesting, said Richard Potts, director of the Human Origins Program at the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History. Humans trace their origins out of Africa into the Middle East and then on to other parts of the world. The genetic relationship with Neanderthals was found in people from Europe, China and Papua-New Guinea, but not people from Africa. Paabo agreed his finding does not mean that only people from outside Africa have some cave man biology. With more study it might be found in some Africans also. The closest extinct relative to modern people, Neanderthals existed from about 400,000 years ago to about 30,000 years ago. They coexisted with modern humans for 30,000 to 50,000 years in Europe and western Asia. While many people think of Neanderthals as very primitive, archaeologists have found they had tools for things like hunting and sewing, controlled fire, lived in shelters and buried their dead. Asked if the findings show differences between Africans and non-Africans, Paabo replied that people who want to present data in some sort of racist perspective would find a way to do so. He said, one way to look at this data could be to say people outside Africa are more primitive, while another way could be to say there is something beneficial about being part Neanderthal. "There is no basis to link this to some sort of advantage of one group over another," he said. Erik Trinkaus, an anthropologist at Washington University welcomed the study, saying that now experts "can get on to other things than who was having sex with who in the Pleistocene." | ||

i think couple of years back Neanderthal fossils were found in western china too, chinese recovered a preserved mummy of neanderthal, it had red hair and brown eyes. the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada | ||

Twitter, The large collection of neanderthal fossils, if I recall right were found in a cave in Spain...and hispanics have physical features similar to asians... Sometime back they reconstructed the neanderthal female based on these fossils...remember seeing a pic - she had dark hair, tawny skin and brown eyes - not the pale skin and hair associated with Europeans ... Probably a lot of humanity in Asia has Neanderthal lineage too...the migratory paths and timelines are always interesting Neanderthals lived in Europe and western Asia over 200,000 years ago and became extinct 30,000-40,000 years ago..unless they have made discoveries that alter those days... Modern homo-sapiens left Africa about 65,000 years ago ... It is believed that the intersection of these species happened somewhere in West Asia (Possibly middle east ). It is also theorized that the modern humans were responsible for the extinction of Neanderthals... There are some interesting differences in attributed features of Neanderthals - hair color(red) , nasal formation(big protruding noses) and jaw framework. They also suspect that Neanderthals reached puberty 4-5 years earlier than modern humans(origin of child marriages ?) , had the same brain size as humans ... well it is always a debatable argument according to human Evolution chart humans are followed by H.eructus ,you won't find N.Man in this chart any where I don't clearly understand this ,some say H.Sapien evolved from N.Man with better and bigger size brain . for me it looks like two separate origins - Germans evolved from N.Man and rest of the world evolved from normal evolution chart (chimpanzee-gorilla ...) . | ||
