ok, article chadava ledu. I think we can implement the same for simple or important issues through positive reinforcement and incentives that they appreciate. Btw, about encouraging reading, schools here maintain reading goals/logs and they give small incentives. We can do the same at home. However, I feel that more than reading, comprehension is important. They need to understand and be able to articulate what they read. | ||

What works best for kids (once they start understanding cause-effect) is positive reinforcement. Rather than threats, commands or bribes, we need to encourage them with realistic goals. And those goals need to be near-term, depending on the age of the kid. You can actually implement them even for simple issues. In the below experiment, in dallas region what they did was: Instead of giving money if kids get good grades or get good marks in the tests, they bribed err rewarded the kids 2$ for every book they read.. I felt this is the best approach. I think we need to emphasize more on reading books. Not sure how to start with kids who are around 7+ years old?? What I observed in this db is, db'ers who read books are more intelligent [naturally], matured and have good sense on life. [This doesnt mean the other way]. One of the interesting observation from the article is: The author was asked by the experimentor to solve a third degree differential equation and would be paid a million dollars, if he did. The later definitely couldnt solve it. So, if a kid is asked to get first rank or good marks and get a promise to be paid, that might not work. Read this article in TIME magazine. Interesting stuff.. 18,000 kids from dallas/D.C/NY/Chicago were paid from 2$ to xx $ if they get good grades or attend school more or read a book etc..
