Sravanthi, daughter of veteran Telugu film actress, Jamuna, were arrested by the police on Thursday following a complaint that they were harassing her for additional dowry. Sravanthi's husband, A. Rahul Reddy, is absconding, the police said. Sravanthi and Rahul Reddy were in love and got married secretly against the wishes of their family elders in 2006. Later, the couple patched up with their respective family elders and a reception was organised. Differences started between the two families when the Rahul Reddy's family members expressed discontentment when Sravanthi's parents offered Rs. 1 lakh towards dowry for bridegroom's sister, Hyderabad Detective Department's woman police station Inspector, A.P. Anand Kumar, said. According to the complainant, the bridegroom's family members insisted Rs. 10 lakh instead of Rs. 1 lakh but finally accepted Rs. 4.75 lakh. Ms. Sravanthi maintained that the in-laws demanded Skoda Laura car as gift when she was blessed with a baby boy two years ago though they presented Verna petrol car on the occasion to Rahul Reddy. In August last, Ms. Sravanthi moved a local court for divorce allegedly after Rahul Reddy and his parents started pressuring her to give the house of her parents located at Banjara Hills to him for development. “It seems Rahul Reddy told her they can make Rs. 200 crore by selling the house and constructing flats,” the Inspector said. Ms. Sravanthi also charged that her husband had sold off Rs. 15 lakh worth jewellery of hers and misused the amount. Based on her complaint, the police registered a criminal case under sections 498-A (in-laws subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code and sections four and six of Dowry Prohibition Act. Hunt is on for Rahul Reddy. | ||

married 3 years back had a kid, filed for divorce last year. normally anybody will try to make the marriage work not wreck it and its a love marriage on top of it. so she would have felt it could get better and only came out once it was unbearable. Dowry is something that is given at the time of marriage. Why does Jamuna's family call this as dowry? Can it still be called like that? I am aksing because do the laws on dowry apply to such a case? | ||
