Looks like a good alternative to linksys and cheap. The best part is, you can throw dd-wrt firmware on it.

//The issue is, if it is a single frequency (say, 2.4GHz) radio, it accepts 802.11n clients fine. The minute, it connects any 802.11b/g client, then the whole radio works in b or g mode, dropping the speed on n clients. If the router has separate radios for each freq., then you can separate the n and b/g clients based on the freq. Little complicated setup, but works like charm.

802.11n routers are the best.

Right. Kaani andhulo chala type unnayi. Default is single band (2.4GHz) or dual band (2.4/5GHz). Again, the radio works in only one frequency "at a time". Then, there are simultaneous dual band routers, which have 2 radios running in 2.4 & 5 GHz in parallel. Here, you can configure 802.11n on 5Ghz band and 802.11b/g in 2.4GHz band, so there will not be interference.

The issue is, if it is a single frequency (say, 2.4GHz) radio, it accepts 802.11n clients fine. The minute, it connects any 802.11b/g client, then the whole radio works in b or g mode, dropping the speed on n clients. If the router has separate radios for each freq., then you can separate the n and b/g clients based on the freq. Little complicated setup, but works like charm.

The only router I came across with all these features is Linksys WRT610n. You can get this for about $140 on street.

802.11n routers are the best. But my question is, what is your need before we can advice on how to utilise the speed? For suppose 300mbps speed unna router unnaa, if you are browsing internet or downloading off internet, the webpage should be able to serve you with such a speed. At the max 1mBps speed untadi, ante 8mbps.. still way less.

I have one desktop PC, two laptops, Wii gaming, one iphone 3gs on wifi, all connected to internet 24x7 in my home, so some how i feel I am NOT getting enough speed for browsing internet, and downloading stuff etc..

Mav: Depends on your router. 802.11g aithe 54mbps, 11n aithe 300mbps.. ofcourse, distance to the output device ekkuva unte 11g speed drastic gaa padipothadi.. bottomline, for a one living room viewing, one router is enough.. 11g should be good enough..

Good question. But i would imagine pch to be a client which serves the server.. mari browser support ante proper OS undaali kadaa.. research chestaa..

Stig: Thanks dude.. I have some applications which burn subtitles onto the movie file, hardway.. but it takes a while as mine is pentium-4.. Another problem i face with ps3 regarding subtitles is: If an mkv file has subtitles already burned into the file, then to convert this mkv to avi, it takes a day on my pc.. I need some easier solutions.. cost koddigaa gichhinaa, konaalsinde..

they are pretty close from functionality point of view. You can not upgrade much on WDTV and support is limited. OTOH, there is large user forum for support for Popcorn hour, plus you can install add-ons to enhance the futures. Firmware is constantly changing for PCH keeping the device up-to-date with technology.

Yes, it works. A high-end PC usually has 300W - 600W power supply. Where as, home server typically has about 50W power supply. Now, imagine running it 24/7 for years.

With 64-bit OS you can go over 4GB memory (RAM). It has nothing to do with storage. Storage can be added as much as you can via internal drives, usb/eSata ports to both 32-bit/64-bit OS machines.

If you are interested in building an HTPC or have someone build for you, there are decent cases to pick. They really mix with other components in the AV rack.

For people with multiple media-viewing areas, home servers are suggested. In my case, I left the server upstairs in my office room. I have several media clients playing the content from server like HTPC in living room (downstairs), PS3/bluray player (basement), bluray player(bedroom). These clients have to be DLNA certified and should be on same home network.

If you live in an apartment or with only one primary viewing area, having a server is not optimal. You can just have one PC connected to TV directly that hosts all the media.

An HTPC is just a geek term for PC with TV tuner. So, you can pick any off-the-shelf PC and use as HTPC.

work lo jara busy ga unde, so reply iyyale.

Looks like people have misconceptions about the home servers, htpc, streaming etc. Let me give a brief idea.

Home Server like HP Ex machine, is a small form-factor box with hot-swappable hard drives and network/usb ports. It does NOT have a video/graphics card. So, you cannot connect this server to a tv or monitor. It connects to your router via ethernet cable. Storage can be expanded by adding internal hard disks to drive bays or external HDs to USB/eSata ports. You don't even connect a keyboard or mouse to it. You need a "client" device (which directly connects to TV) on the same network to access the media from server.

continued...

Chaalaa mandi build chestaru anukuntaa ilaage from scratch and you might loose the size/small form factor.. I think there are some chips the pc/server need to have so that it can stream whatever the file format you thro at it.. and also the sound [dts]..

another one I found was: Say your camcorder records >30fps, then most pc's/servers might not play at that recorded rate.. they might downgrade to: say 30fps, if you record at 60fps.. There are so many indepth things that we are totally unaware of.. and if you build one from scratch or a personal PC, you will keep it open for future technologies or futureproof.. adhe ex laanti machine konte, may be after couple of years, hdmi laanti inko thop interface ostademo..

So, to me it depends on your dimensions of the living room/space etc.. naa living room lo PC ni attukelli TV pakkana edithe baagodu.. so I need a small form factor streamer.. its all your choice..

i dont think so..its like ur external hard drive only it's dependant on network...as simba already said network speed will be the bottleneck but not the server.

This looks cool. Go for it.

Few things I noticed from the specs:

Only AMD processor. No Intel option.
Default integrated Audio supports 2.1 channel only (upgrade reqd)
Does not mention about bitstream audio-out from HDMI

sorry. nee post choodaledhu.

It depends on the network. ex495 can stream 1080p if you the client is wired to ethernet or connected wireless via 802.11n. The bottleneck can be the network than server.

From the WHS forums, HP is going to refresh their home server lineup soon. So, if you are in the market for it, wait for the newer models.

Got it..

"The process of getting the EX495 up and running is easy and straightforward. Just plug the server into your router and run the Software Installation Disc on any of the PCs connected to the network and follow the onscreen instruction. Note that this is a time-consuming process.

Once setup, the EX195 can be accessed via either the HP MediaSmart Server Control Center software, by browsing through Windows Explorer, or any network browsers. If you use Mac, the server will automatically appear on the Finder. To use the Server's support for Time Machine, you'll need to install the "HP MediaSmart Server" software included on the first DVD. We didn't run into any problems setting up on OSX 10.5, nor Windows, and were ready to go within about 30 minutes. "

Right. iPad can not be used as cell phone. It takes a "Micro SIM" which is smaller than regular sim card.

so do u recommend buying this comparing to drobo etc

Definitely I recommend.

Drobo is just NAS working as file server. But, HP's WHS can back up all your machines (PC and Mac), collect media from each machine and copy to itself, catalog, convert to supported format in background (for PS3, iPhone etc). It has built-in iTunes server, Twonky media server. It allows you to register a domain for free, so you can access your content from outside. And the list goes on...

Simba mama.... okka chinna kotchen..you were mentioning about IPAD 3G yesterday... could you please shed some light on it? how is it different from the current one?

iPads are 2 types:

1) iPad (Wifi): This is like iPod touch. Connects to internet though wifi. So, any online activity works at home or wifi hotspot. This is available now for purchase.

2) iPad (3G+wifi): This is like iPhone. When you are home, connects to wifi. Step out of the range, you are on 3G connection. So, you can be online while roaming on roads. This will be available end of the month, ready for pre-order. 3G version costs $130 more than wifi version.

3G is provided by AT&T with no contract.
$14.99/month - 250MB limit
$29.99/month - no limit
