Troublemakers a restrained lot! TNN, Apr 1, 2010, 04.11am IST HYDERABAD: After a day of peace, police officials claimed that although the curfew had restrained troublemakers from becoming active on Wednesday, there was a silver lining in the whole episode. This, they perceived, was the unwillingness of mischief mongers from both the communities to cross the rubicon. âThis far and no further, is the thinking, it seems to us. That is why we see large scale rioting but relatively less loss of life,â a senior cop said. As an instance, a senior cop pointed out to the Goshala and a small temple in the same complex in Shah Ali Banda being attacked two days ago. âThough the hundi in the temple was thrown around, the image of the God was not touched. If it were a full fledged attack, the image would have been first attacked. It is as if the troublemakers were restraining themselves,â he averred. Other cops pointed out that although the crowds were violent, they were in most cases unwilling to go beyond stone pelting (this may not be fully true because a large number of vehicles were set on fire). âI have seen crowds getting more violent in these circumstances, but not this time,â a senior cop said. Sources averred that the restraint by the two sides may be borne out of the realisation that both of them are equally poised in terms of strength. âThe doctrine of mutual deterrence could be at work,â an analyst speculated. The fact that there have been no communal violence in the city for the past decade and a half would also mean that ultra elements in the two communities canât take it for granted that the larger society will rally behind them in the event of disturbances. This itself is a deterrence of a kind, analysts said. âThings have changed over the years. With development and economic growth, people are not willing to invest so much in supporting trouble-making. They want to get ahead with their lives and this is the ultimate silver lining in the situation,â the president of local residents association said. Though happy that trouble making has not escalated beyond manageable levels, cops warn that everything is not hunky-dory. The real test would be when the curfew is relaxed, they point out. Whatever be the take of police officers, the far sighted amongst the citizenry say that more than communal elements it is the incompetence of the police force that stands out glaringly. âIt appears to me that Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh police have gone to seed. The top leadership does not inspire awe among the men who comprise the forces. The sub-inspectors and inspectors look for orders to politicians and not their own bosses. This politicisation of the force is the real danger,â said K S Rao (name changed) a serving civil servant. |

BJP President Nitin Gadkari today formed a five-member team of party leaders which will visit riot-affected areas of Hyderabad as soon as the curfew is relaxed to get first-hand information of the situation there. Gadkari has selected BJP spokespersons Prakash Jawadekar and Nirmala Sitharaman along with party secretary Dr Lakshman, Prahlad Joshi (Lok Sabha MP from Dharwad), and B Shanappa (Karnataka Rajya Sabha MP) for the team, party sources said. Jawadekar will be heading the team and it will go to Hyderabad when curfew is relaxed in the city. BJP had earlier demanded a judicial probe into the reported attacks on temples and cows during the riots in Hyderabad alleging they were pre-meditated and unprovoked. Jai NTR, Jai Jai TDP |
