http://www.dailypioneer.com/245692/Nitish-justifies-AMU-bran ch-in-Bihar.html Nitish justifies AMU branch in Bihar Amarnath Tewary | Patna A day after police rained lathi blows on them, the protesting ABVP students on Tuesday observed âblack dayâ and called for Bihar bandh on April 1, while the Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar justified the governmentâs decision to open a branch of Aligarh Muslim University at Kishanganj. Earlier on Monday the State Government had justified the police lathicharge on the ABVP activists protesting the governmentâs decision to open AMU branch at Kishanganj. âThe police had resorted to lathicharge in self defence. The protesting students had entered into prohibited zone and pelted stones on the policemen,â said the water resources minister Bijendra Yadav on Monday. Significantly, ABVP is the student wing of the ruling party alliance BJP and the police lathicharge on the protesting students has put the party in an embarrassing situation. Most of the BJP leader, including the Deputy chief minister Shushil Kumar Modi were hooted and forced to retreat from the hospital when they visited there to meet the injured students. However, some of the BJP leaders like Nitish Navin, Ganga Prasad and Ashwani Choubey did manage to meet the furious ABVP students and extended their full sympathy while flaying the police action on them. Meanwhile, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has tried to water down the issue saying there should not be any opposition to setting up a branch of AMU at Kishanganj. âThe government is committed to improve the educational atmosphere and level in the State and it has nothing to do with any community as the AMU branch will benefit people across party lines,â he said emphatically. The State Government has already provided 243 acres of land for setting up the AMU branch at Muslim-dominated district Kishanganj. Muslims make up 66.7 per cent of the voters in the bordering Kishanganj district. The infiltration of minority community population from neighbouring Bangladesh has changed the demographic figure of the area, and the studentâs wing of the BJP has been protesting the issue of illegal infiltration since long. However, in the wake of the police action on them the ABVP students on Tuesday observed Black Day in the State and have also announced a torch-light procession on Wednesday followed by Bihar bandh call on April 1. On the issue of lathicharge, Umesh Kumar an ABVP leader said that it appeared BJP had surrendered before the ruling JD-U and âif the party would continue to do so it will face an Orissa-like situation here tooâ. However, political observers believe that with the assembly polls round the corner the police action on the protesting ABVP activists might be a calculated move by the ruling JD-U to send a message to the minority community. âThe government has already announced a number of schemes and measures for the welfare of the minority community and on the eve of Assembly polls the lathicharge on the student wing of the alliance partner BJP, might come as a confidence building measure for the JD-U,â said one political analyst. Meanwhile, the Bihar BJP has been put in an embarrassing situation over the stand they should take on the issue. âThey can neither go against their ruling partner JD-U, nor antagonise their studentsâ wing ahead of the Assembly pollsâ, said a BJP leader. Party sources told The Pioneer that a majority of the BJP leaders have expressed their strong reservation over the police action, but some of them played safe and tried their best to defuse the situation. |
