Anand_n:

but everything including scriptures point to a recursive /fractal universe - that the human body is a microcosm and so on . ... If that is right then understanding even a drop in the cup will help you imderstamd the teacup...

Posting some links for for people who want to read and explore further into

Fractal universe :
http://www.fractaluniverse.org/v2/?page_id=81

Scriptural depiction of human body as a microcosm - this link has a nice set of quotes affirming that depiction from world scriptures :
http://www.tparents.org/Library/Unification/Books/World-S/WS -05-03.htm

I lay no claim to validating the veracity of these sites - so read and believe at your own risk :-)

yeah...I read about this before! he also played with unprivileged kids when he visited Chennai couple of years back on behalf of UN...

I too agree about the 25 consecutive grand slam semi-final appearances... that speaks volumes about his consistency and dominance...just like Sachin...

consistency in their games...humility in their nature make these two geniuses shine like stars....

proud to be a die-hard fan of both Sachin and KING!

are you watching miami masters? Fed has started a little shaky but djokovic, murray lost in 2nd round and nadal had a scare from nalbandian. If Fed wins this, I think he is almost a lock to break Sampras' 286 weeks as No.1 in a couple of months' time.

@Chiru_Fan:

practice was good. underestimated my cousin's energy and overestimated my reflexes (talking about reflexes.....ivvalla sachin catch super! I screamed like crazy at that moment, even though I am a die-hard gilchrist fan!). nothing like hitting a few good cricket shots.

sachin was on fire when he started today. too bad middle order let him down. still, some totally vintage sachin shots. shot of the day was the paddle sweep off ojha! paddle sweep ni sachin sweep ani rename cheyali. after the flick, that's a shot sachin is totally a master off.

Last post to me?

That's a totally naive statement, when you are communicating on a PUBLIC discussion board unless you are deluding your self that you are going to control what appears on my computer screen. You must have coaxed your mind into NOT recollecting that you are not on an island talking to yourself.

@Der,

Brother, I think I already told you this once before, but let me repeat. Ideological differences must be discussed with logic and reasoning. If you think her logic is weaker, prove it objectively with yours.

Using words like 'shite' and 'BS' while discussing with co-DBers is very much disdainful.

Profanity always indicates lack of intelligence.

Ok annai...apologize...but I cant stand pseudo talks abt science...to quote and to assert are 2 different things in as much I have been trained with...I cant stand the presence of people who assert with out being masters of what they are talking abt....its reflects extreme disrespect to science and I cant stand it..

Did I ever talk to u along those lines?? U and me have diametrically opposite views on scientific method and relevance...and I always respectfully request for ur stances...dont I

Don't know who u are and care the least to know....but as she/he said save ur keystrokes...when u use a scientific word be prepared to answer Q's abt it esp when u try to sell urself as an expert on human condition and its relevance to scientific method....

I think any one who says that Human mind "IS" a series of DIODES is plainly not capable of any rigor of science and hence is expected to resort to name throwing...so typical of the post modern intellectual abuse syndrome

Jalsa:

not sure why he's targetting you

evadu chesadadu dora....Scriptures point to a fractal universe ani nee deggara evaranna ante...first question is : Can u point me to one.....kaadha??

If some one talks abt fractal universe, dont u expect them then to know in and out of fractal dynamics and chaos????

If u dont know that...then the way is to use a qualifier...that I am not qualified to talk abt this but I "Think" this might be true as opposed to saying: Scriptures point towards a fractal universe....

Its called the scientific culture of a mind to be extremely wary of areas abt which I can't immediately talk abt with absolute authority....

All this moral science BS can be sufficiently used to escape censure....but science is not abt respecting humans and BS notions of virtual respect...it is abt....respecting the integrity of a mind to be helpless before nature's complexity and work towards even daring to talk abt it....that is what Newton referred to..."The pedigree of intellectual honesty is a boon from Gods"

Since when is science a structure to explain human importance??? It is purely abt understanding nature and not theorizing the nature of good and bad...then lets shift gears and talk abt metaphysics...

Anand_n:

Well, you still included technologies ...where would you get technologies without science ?

there were technologies even before current science and technology.....before there used to be diversity in technology based on local conditions and man was not replaced by machines.....that technology was human centric.....current technologies consumes huge amounts of non-renewable energy , it suits and favours capitalistic greed and centralised administrative structures...it thrives on standardisation killing diversity....replaces man with machine and treats him as an economic animal...even today if fossil fuels are not availabe...it's very difficult to sustain current structures....

Anand_n:

If the answer was already known and defined - why would there be so much effort put to going the wrong way ? Does not make logical sense to me atleast.

because the vested interests that control current structures will loose their clout if we go on right path....

" cuz a true scientist derives great pride in acceding not knowing stuff on the drop of a hat....than BS'ing that his kids can recollect 100 digits of Pi....who effing cares....abt recollection... "

>>>>> I guess you did not get the memo on a true human? It reads thus :

A true human derives great pride in not judging people on the drop of a hat..... than BSing that he is a SCIENTIST..... who effing cares about a SCIENTIST that is not human?

If you cannot appreciate the fact that a kid can recollect the value of pi to 100 digits, what use is all the SCIENTIFIC knowledge?

Even though you don't put much price on recollection, you would do well to remember this :

"The purpose of knowledge is not to become a great scientist but a great human being"

As if I care if u are a poster or not...my challenge is always to the content of a post not to who the heck posts it......

"What do u mean by a fractal universe and can u suggest a name of a scripture that argues towards it...obviating the need to underline that u know shite abt scriptures, which scientific school of thought said: Fractal universe is how universe evolves but for a bunch of observational cosmologists with C grade PhD's....even they stopped taking that claims seriously...as it has been refuted long back...."

If u want to talk abt fractals....then u shud be an expert on dynamical system theory...at the very least...I have studied a bit of Dynamical systems but I cant even dream of using the word fractal in the context of a evolutionary cosmology...nonetheless, cud u care to explain how do u calculate the fractal dimension of say a tent map?? clearly u used fractal dimension in ur reference and so I shud expect u to know this!!!

deeni meaning cheppi punyam kattukondi DB lo evaranna....I mean....which scripture points to a fractal universe....leave out scriptures...which respectable science theorist propounded fractal universe......

fractal universes are a hypothesis of obervational cosmologists which has been refuted long time back....

The person who posted this: Can u out of ur immense knowledge suggest what might be the fractal dimension of universe and if so...how does human life scale with it.....the poster shud then know the fractal number of a koch curve...how much is that cuz if u dont know that then it is better not to talk about the universe...sick of this charlatanism...man...sick of these people who want to scream I know this...with a meagre qualification and scientific expertise...cuz a true scientist derives great pride in acceding not knowing stuff on the drop of a hat....than BS'ing that his kids can recollect 100 digits of Pi....who effing cares....abt recollection...

Well, you still included technologies ...where would you get technologies without science ?

I think we are going around in circles. The possibility that we may be on the wrong path can also be evaluated and ascertained only by scientific measurement - that is the evaluation, correction and evolution method that science provides ...

If the answer was already known and defined - why would there be so much effort put to going the wrong way ? Does not make logical sense to me atleast.

I am just enjoying reading it :-)And by the way - I said I am reading it - did not say I finished it - but I am pretty sure I will finish it in under 2 months as I have to return the book to the library before then

Many of our db folks are not aware that, original and scientific researches found if any will go hand-in-hand. none of the researches results overturned the original universal postulates.

we have a english calendar system but many dont know that its actually for administrative purpose only, official india gazette follows Saka Era calendar system of counting.

Hmmm assuming that u are not anthropomorphic in your intellectual bent (which I found from my conversations with you), why is everything beneficial to humans(??) i.e in terms of life expectancy, incidence of social evils(this is actually very vague.New ones replace older ones perennially)....be the metric of progress if the intent of science is to understand Nature??

Nature certainly is not humans...in fact we assume as insignificant a place as anything else on an entropic standpoint...then are we now defining science along the humanist and non humanist dimesions???

Annai I love talking to u on these questions....

Funny thing about Science is.. Audacity..

Now we are going into philosophy :-)

Isn't Audacity what drives all quests, including spiritual quests? Belief that you can find an answer is the only reason anyone even ventures on a quest to solve :-)

If you do not have that audacious belief you will be content with status quo and stasis :-)

Here we are talking about Anthropology..

We find what we are looking for - you look for stasis you find stasis , I look for progress and find progress :-) different paradigms :-)

Anthopologically the genographic project charted and is charting the origin and movement of humans across the planet...that to me is a great leap ahead:-)

This new DNA can be another input to that - may be they can find different markers...

Here we are talking about Anthropology..

Since I was born nothing much happened..

Nothing much happened since Darwin I guess..

Same old evolution..

Same old Out of Africa..

Same old Missing Link..

Oh yeah.. what does science say about origin of life..

Life originated from Ash.. So Hindus smear Ash..

Life originated from Hard rock.. So Hindus worship rock Idols..

Life originated from space dust.. So Hindus worship Planets.. Stars..

Life originated from inanimate.. So Hindus worship Hills and Mountains..

Firstly Let me wish all of you a Happy Ugadi.

Thank you and wish you the same:-) Hope you had a good trip.

Yeah - lots more mysteries to be solved...the part I thought you would find interesting was the timeline - does it jell better with your calculations - but if so was it a diffeent species altogether than current day humans ?

Iamim:

edo authundi authundi.. an eduru choodame ganee.. em jaragadu...

I find that statement startling - our generation has probably seen the maximum transformation, advances in both theoretical and applied sciences...The whole dynamic of human evolution is changing way beyond what we could have even dreamed of as kids ...

The understanding of the universe, and the human body has increased a thousand fold ...our kids know and understand stuff in teens that we did not learn till much later...monna ikkada Stig Fibonacci video post chesaru - I showed it to my 14 year old with the intent of asking him to read up the explanation but a few seconds into the video he was explaining to me how the spirals and golden ratio worked mathematically..that is the power of information at fingertips...

Its fascinating to listen in to the conversations among his peer group..they talk knowledgeably about everything from Schrodinger to Plato...The rate of learning is growing exponentially..And the best thing is that this generation thrives on sharing knowledge , not hoarding it:-)

I believe the cumulative knowledge is fast reaching critical mass ...I have great expectations from the next generation :-)

I am bracing myself for the breakthroughs which I anticipate will be coming in quick succession :-)

But then you and I have always been at the opposite ends of the optimism scale :-)

Firstly Let me wish all of you a Happy Ugadi.

I am just back from india after a well deserved vacation and so i was not able to contribute to the discussions here.

I did read about the news in my favourite site couple of hours ago. It goes without saying that what we know about human evolution is just what we discovered until now and there might be many more mysteries that might unravel in the years to come. It could well throw open interesting discoveries later, i am sure siberia and the rest of the areas of world which are covered in huge layers or ice could throw up more mysteries

At least the 'movement' is faster in physical sciences. It goes to show that decoding external mysteries is relatively easier than internal.

Biology and Evolutionary studies are extremely limited by technologies. That's why the progress is very slow compared to physical sciences. Look at the progress in Physics. From geocentric models to E=mc2 and moon landing, the leap is huge.

Biology moves in very small pieces. To discover minute piece in the puzzle, it takes years and years of hard work. Also, conclusions and hypotheses are rewritten all the time.

One must not expect earth shaking discoveries from a single study in biology. These findings might not be very revolutionary but small pieces of the big puzzle. Of course every scientist claims his finding is ground breaking (otherwise they cant sell their paper). And critics (and professional rivals) always on the hunt for loopholes in the interpretations.

Put aside various interpretations, the novel finding itself is interesting. More findings will narrow down the huge variation of perspectives.

But other experts are not so sure about the team's interpretation of their data. "I don't know—and nobody else does—how many base-pair changes make a new species," says Erik Trinkaus of Washington University in Saint Louis, an authority on Neandertals and early modern humans. "I would like to have more than the number of mtDNA base pair differences to go on."

"The result doesn't mean that they've found a new species, and I don't believe it requires a separate pre-Neandertal migration out of Africa," argues John Hawks of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, whose research focuses on human genetic evolution. "Those explanations are both compatible with the result, but I don’t think the data require them yet." Hawks notes that the history of an mtDNA sequence—which is just a tiny fraction of a person's total DNA—does not necessarily reflect the history of a species.
