In an interview to a Tamil magazine, he poured cold water over the succession plan that his father and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had made - anointing his third and favourite son MK Stalin to lead the party after he retires from politics. This is not the first time Alagiri has dismissed succession plan of his father since Stalin was made the Deputy Chief Minister. However, this time he has made it clear that he will not accept anyone after Karunanidhi as his leader.

"When I was 10 years old, my leader explained to me about Dravidian culture and Periyar. At that time Periyar appeared to be the leader for me. Later, Anna's speech and writings attracted me and I accepted him as my leader. After Anna, then, now and forever Thalaivar Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) alone is my leader. There is no need to think of others when Kalaignar is alive," Alagiri said in the interview and went on to add: "After him, I will not accept anybody as DMK leader. Nobody can replace him in terms of his value or capability."

Karunanidhi, who was campaigning for the by-election in Pennagaram, was taken aback when asked about Alagiri's interview. But he promptly quipped: "Go and ask him." He, however, went on to add that he himself did not know when his retirement would begin and that there was no need to discuss such things now.

While Stalin has built up the youth of the DMK, Alagiri used his muscle in the southern districts to wrench the strong vote-bank from the AIADMK. As he had assured his father, he ensured the victory of all DMK candidates in the southern constituencies in the Lok Sabha election last year. He was elected from the Madurai constituency.

A day after Alagiri was made a Central Minister, as per understanding with the siblings on their roles in politics, Stalin was made the Deputy Chief Minister and given most of the portfolios that Karunanidhi held.

However, Alagiri seemed uncomfortable right from the beginning in Parliament and shied away to Madurai most often.

Meanwhile, Karunanidhi in December made a statement which was more or less an announcement of his retirement after the World Classical Tamil Conference to be held in Coimbatore in June. "Among my ambitions, several have been fulfilled but there are a few still remaining. The question is whether I need this ministerial office to work for the deprived classes. My answer is — brushing aside politics and power, I will come closer to you and consider myself as one among you," he had said at a function.

The succession embers that were subdued so long began to sparkle again. Alagiri in January dismissed the retirement announcement as a rumour. Both he and Stalin said that their father would continue to be the leader. They vowed, as Stalin had said, to function as "double-barrelled gun". On the eve of Alagiri's birthday (on January 30) in Madurai posters appeared saying "Happy Birthday Alagiri, CM (Chemical Minister)", leaving none in doubt that Alagiri and his supporters wanted him to be Karunanidhi's successor.

Again Karunanidhi made a statement on how Stalin should take over the responsibilities as a leader: "Stalin should continue the works to be left by me and Perasiriyar (DMK general secretary and State Finance Minister K Anbazhagan)."

This has built up the anxiety in Alagiri, who is neither a success in New Delhi nor is able to stake power in the State.

Karunanidhi's weakness for Stalin is a known factor. His partiality towards this younger son evoked rivalry in the family. To ensure less trouble, Alagiri was sent to Madurai to manage the party in the south. Alagiri converted the south into his fiefdom. Antagonism between the two brothers and their supporters continued, until the murder of a former DMK Minister, following which Alagiri was arrested. Karunanidhi and his wife Dayalu Ammal tried to bring about a truce between the two brothers.

Though they have been civil with each other, Alagiri's anger against Stalin never died down. In 2007, when Tamil daily Dinakaran, owned by Karunanidhi’s grand nephews Kalanidhi and Dayanidhi Maran, published an article claiming Stalin as the most-favoured successor, Alagiri's supporters set fire to the Dinakaran office killing three persons. It also led to the fall of Dayanidhi Maran as the Central IT Minister.

It was just before the 2009 elections that all differences were settled between the Karunanidhi children and the Marans. There was also an understanding on the roles Stalin, Alagiri and their sister Kanimozhi would get in politics. With all that settled, Stalin was made the Deputy Chief Minister.
